Thief steals postman's letters from his bag

POLICE are searching for a thief who snatched a handful of letters from a postman's bag.
The thief struck after spotting a postman’s bike left leaning against a wall in Mandeville, Orton Goldhay, Peterborough.

A police spokesman said the postman was some distance away from the bike, but saw the thief take a handful of letters from his bag.

The incident happened at about 10.30am on Saturday, October 18.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “The security and safety of mail is of prime importance to us, and we would urge anyone with information to contact the police.

He added: “Any customers who have concerns about mail that maybe missing should contact customer services on 08457 740 740.”

A Cambridgeshire police spokesman said officers were investigating the incident.”

nAnyone who may have information about the theft should contact police on 0845 456 4564.

Question remains why wasn't the postman carrying his or her bag over the shoulder when apparently he or she was actually some distance away from the bike?

In todays oppressive atmosphere everyone should be carrying their bags (and turning their vans off and locking them) all the time. RM can't get away with their petty vendettas if you do the job properly.

So are you saying the poor old postie should be carrying the mail all the time rather than leave it on the bike? Where do you draw the line? If the bike can't be seen should the postman be carrying it? And yet it is perfectly ok for full pouches to be left on doorsteps because Royal Mail can't organise safe pouch drops.

That's exactly what I'm saying it's called doing the job properly, as long as bag weights are not in excess of safe prescribe delivery weights then there shouldn't be a major problem whilst out on delivery. The line as you say is really drawn when an individual postman or postwoman decides to for convenience sake to leave their bag of mail on the bike unattended and continues on with their particular delivery along a street. You can't have eyes in the back of your head all of the time and in that instant when you ain't looking back bang, some opportunist nerd sneak thief has nipped in and either grabbed a handful of mail or indeed took the whole bag. And no it is not ok for full pouches to be left on doorsteps. This is not safeguarding the mail and it simply should not be happening. We know these unsafe work practices are aloud to continue by RM managers it's their problem so let them come up with a solution.

Ask yourself who goes down the conduct code when mail is not properly safeguarded and is stolen, a wee clue (ain't the DOM)!
