As I understand it the main argument for privatisation is that it would bring new investment into Royal Mail but whatever happened to the £1.2 billion loan extended to us last year? The only investment we have seen is lots of extra wings on our frames to cope with the bigger walks (although no money spent on new pouches to put the extra mail in) and we hear of a couple of malfunctioning Walk Sorting Machines being introduced somewhere although I sincerely hope they won't be paid for in full until they work satisfactorily. So what happened to the rest of that £1.2 billion? Is it in an Icelandic bank?

Eric,
RM have a terrible history of implementing IT and operational equipment. Anyone heard of HWDC in here? If you have then you'll know all about that major kock up. The £1.2bn will be used to modernise the machinery, but to be honest relying on internal staff to deliver this is general madness and everyone knows that non-operational management are those who couldn't geenrally hack it doing a proper job in Ops. These so-called project managers delivering the future of RM is a joke.
This is inspite of Crozier and Leighton knowing that change is only going to happen if those at the frontline understand it and implement it themselves, so if you haven't got larger piuches etc. then there is a major gap between senior exec. and the implmentation at a frontline Ops level.
What is true is that this will eventually get sorted, but it will be painful for those involved. Mis-sorts etc. A few court cases against suppliers...

They didn't spend any of it on the wings for my expanded walk - I had to unscrew them from one of the walks that they took out - it's more likely being spent on the extra 4 hours a week in overtime that it now takes me to do my walk along with all the other posties that are becoming physical wrecks carrying the banner of progress.Eric wrote:As I understand it the main argument for privatisation is that it would bring new investment into Royal Mail but whatever happened to the £1.2 billion loan extended to us last year? I was asking a few of my colleagues what ever happened to the £1.2 billion the other day. With the economy in financial crisis, RM better 'pull their socks up' . At the end of the day it is the government that pays our wages/salaries and this is probably why Mandy wants to privatise RM so they are not paying our wages/salaries. Whereas, if RM was privatised the government would not have to pay wages they will just collect the VAT from privatisation, from which RM is exempt, the government has to pay back the taxpayers monies that has been used to bail-out the banks. I also think that other public companies will also be privatised and that the government will be looking at the wages bill for public sector workers.Eric wrote:As I understand it the main argument for privatisation is that it would bring new investment into Royal Mail but whatever happened to the £1.2 billion loan extended to us last year? Our wages are paid from the income royal mail get for delivering letters, not the government!
