One of our "managers" said "what do Postcomm know?"

We've been given this Preference Exercise,it's national apparently and because Saturdays are going - You couldn't make it up

Sorry but that is not national: 2 reasons.

1. I have not heard of a preference exercise yet and we were talking about it in WTL this week.

2. The form shown is local - if it was national I am 99% sure it would have a more professional feel and a RM logo on it somewhere.

I think its some DOM or Area Manager looking to get brownie points by getting a "local agreement" in principle by you filling these forms in.

My Advice: Check with Area Rep to see if you should be filling this in, everyone has stories or has heard stories on how sneaky they can be. Of course it could be all above board but I have my suspicions.

The postal services act 2000 obliges RML to deliver Monday to Saturday, under EU postal services Law we could drop the saturday but the UK parliment would have to vote in favour of that. As long as we are providing a service Monday to Friday we meet EU law. Saturdays is a add on from UK law.

To not provide a service on any day between Monday to Friday would be in breach of EU law!

And what about the longs and shorts? Aren't they meant to accomodate our freinds in TNT etc so they can send stuff right at the end of the week like they do now? Would love to work Mon-Sat, and would even be prepared to work a longer day for it, within reason, but don't think it would ever happen.

Mon - Fri = 4x10 hour shift + 1x10 hour matrix/floating shift per duty

This would perhaps accomodate the seemingly impossible pegasus revisions that are doing the rounds at the moment too, with the work from saturdays being spread across the 'lighter' mondays and tuesdays thus evening out the work load which is, at present, one of the major problems at least in my office (f**k all for 2 days then too much for the other days)

Ah! We were told we had to drop second deliveries because they didn't do them in Europe. Virtually all of Europe doesn't get a Saturday delivery. Time we dropped them as well then?

It would be very interesting to see a vote of CWU members (not Conference) on deliveries as to wether they wanted to get rid of Saturdays or not. I'd definitely be in favour of getting rid, as would virtually all the staff in my unit.

and even out the work load through the week, with skeleton services for firms on a Sat for those that would work it on an overtime basis.
The floaters can be redployed to do ips and sorting including Sat business service.
It can be done, without too much in the way of job losses hopefully, we have worked the longest hours of any business, when I joined it was 45 hours 21 years ago, victorian hours if you ask me.

I am convinced any vote for Mon - Fri would win by a landslide. I don't think the impact on jobs would be that great as many offices are well below establishment and a lot of vacncies would vanish. I also believe that many others would opt for VR if the package was right.

The thought of working Mon - Fri delights me and I am a Manager, I would risk my job by voting for it but.............I don't think it will happen, RM's board insist a six day delivery is what makes us unique and they use this arguement to fight off the opposition although I am not convinced. Another thing is most of the day off cover duties dislike constantly swopping duties this would end as well.

As I understand it SDD was brought in because the 2nd delivery was something like 3 or 4 times more expense per item than the 1st delivery so they thought it would save shed loads - it did for a bit.

That would mean 5 peeps covering the duties over 5 days, not the 6 over 5 we currently have. Or have I mis-read this?

Hours 5 x 10 = 50 hour's or 8 x 6 = 48 but royalmail would save cost's on a five day operation but who draws the short straw?.
