HUNDREDS of motorists suffered lengthy tailbacks after a mail van and a lorry crashed on the A64 between York and Malton.
The accident occurred shortly after 5pm yesterday, about half-a-mile south-west of The Jinnah Restaurant, near Flaxton.
A Royal Mail van was travelling towards York when it collided with another HGV. The mail van’s windscreen was shattered and its front badly damaged.
Nobody was injured and the second lorry was cleared from the scene fairly quickly, but the mail van blocked the York-bound lane for two hours, causing long queues in both directions.
Police described the incident as a “minor bump” but said it had caused delays for many drivers.
Officers on the scene directed traffic round the van.
Two fire engines were called to the scene following initial reports of a three-vehicle smash, but neither they nor the ambulances were needed.
At about 6.30pm, emergency services were then called to Eggborough, where a caravan had become disconnected and collided with a van.
