Matthew Furness, a Royal Mail postman who stole parcels containing women's lingerie, was caught wearing a stolen red thong.

Furness, 35, indulged his fetish for wearing sexy lingerie by intercepting items sent in the post, a court heard.

He aroused suspicions after a string of packages of a "female nature" disappeared while he was on duty.

His Royal Mail bosses launched a covert operation which involved planting a parcel containing a women's bra and thong in his van.

Within hours the packet had vanished prompting them to haul Furness in for questioning.

At first the he denied stealing the underwear but was caught out when police officers were called to the sorting office.

They strip-searched married Furness and found he was wearing the red thong that had been planted in his van.

When he appeared in court he admitted he had a fetish problem but said he felt better about it after talking it over with his mates.

The bizarre incident happened while Furness, from Weymouth, Dorset, was working for the Royal Mail between October and December last year.

Bob Booker, prosecuting for the Royal Mail, said: "The defendant worked as a postman when we suspected some items had been stolen or gone missing from the office.

"We carried out surveillance and from that saw he had taken a package we had planted which contained lady's underwear.

"The items that had previously been taken were of a female nature so we were guided as to what might work to catch him.

"As a result we asked him to come in and he was initially ambivalent and didn't want to admit what he had done for obvious reasons of embarrassment.

"He wasn't prepared to co-operate with us over a search of his own person so we asked the police to come and intervene as they had more powers.

"He was searched by an officer who discovered he was actually wearing the lady's thong - this was on the day he stole the planted package.

"He then made full admissions that he had take the bra and thong as well as the previous items."

Furness pleaded guilty to two counts of stealing a packet belonging to the Royal Mail at a previous hearing.

Ian Brazier, defending, told magistrates that Furness had been sacked by the Royal Mail and was now going through a divorce with his wife.

He said: "My client has already suffered as a result of the publicity that surrounds this case.

"It is now out there and he feels as a result he can now talk about it which must have had a very positive effect on him."

From the dock, Furness told magistrates in Weymouth: "My friends have helped me as I am now able to talk to them and I realised that I am not the only person who has gone through something like this and it is more common than you think."

Magistrates imposed a two year conditional discharge on Furness and ordered him to pay £250 costs.

A postman was caught wearing a pair of stolen knickers after his bosses became suspicious that packages were going missing.

Matthew Furness admitted two charges of stealing postal packages belonging to Royal Mail, on October 1 and December 6 last year.

He was caught in a sting operation after postal bosses found an open package in his van, Weymouth Magistrates' Court, in Dorset, heard.

A DVD horror film, The Burning, was planted in his post bag with the wrong address.

The 35-year-old postman from Weymouth failed to handle it as a mis-sort and did not give it to another bay to deal with, the court heard.

A similar operation took place two months later when a bra and thong by Bravissimo worth £49 were placed in the system and Furness again failed to handle them as mis-sorts.

He was caught on CCTV hiding the address on packages and keeping them for himself.

He denied stealing, saying he was being stitched up, when he was first confronted and items were then found in his jacket pocket.

He was asked to strip by police looking for the missing women's underwear when he was discovered to be wearing the thong.

The bra has never been found but the horror DVD was discovered at his home.

Ian Brazier, defending, told the court Furness was an "opportunist" rather than a sophisticated thief and he was undergoing counselling.

He was given a two-year conditional discharge and ordered to pay £250 in costs at Weymouth Magistrates' Court yesterday.
