A petition signed by 10,000 residents is to be handed in to 10 Downing Street as part of a campaign to save a mail centre in Crewe.
The Communication Workers Union said staff at the office face redundancy if they decide not to transfer to another centre in Warrington, a round trip of more than 70 miles.
Union official Steve Wright said: "It is extremely unlikely that employees would travel the distances suggested and this lack of choice leaves a distinct possibility of some members facing compulsory redundancy.
"We call on the Government to stop this madness."
The union said 600 workers will be affected by the proposed closure.
