Amazon slashes delivery charges for XMAS

Amazon, the online retailer, has slashed its free delivery threshold from £15 to £5 in a bid to stimulate consumer confidence in the run-up to Christmas.

The move means that from today customers who spend over £5 on the site will not be charged for delivery. It is the first cut in delivery price that Amazon has made since October 2005, when it reduced the threshold for free delivery from £19 to £15. It means that over 90pc of what Amazon sells will now be delivered for free.

Brian McBride, managing director of Amazon UK, said the move is designed to boost consumer confidence. "It is to get people lifted for Christmas. Times are tough out there and this will come as a welcome bonus for people," he said.

Historically, Amazon has lowered in its delivery price at the start of the fourth quarter, as Christmas nears.

Amazon was founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994 as an online bookstore. It diversified into CDs and DVDs, but in recent years has gone well beyond these traditional products.

The company is now more of an ecommerce company - in the US, clothing, wine and electronics account for a significant part of its sales. Third-party vendors are responsible for just under one third of all its sales.

The latest delivery price cut will cover all categories in the UK, including shoes, jewellery, watches and home and garden products.

the offer is for amazon affiliates eg those who earn commision by click throughs to amazon
