I was wondering - when I've visited the UK previously I've noticed the cycle posties don't wear helmets. In NZ it's compulsory and in fact it's a legal requirement as well. Also here we have letter boxes for delivery, you seem to have a different system i.e. slots in the door, how do you handle parcels and large magazines? We put a card in the letter box and the customer then has to pick the parcel up from the nearest postshop. Hope your week is going well!! Been busy mail here but the weather's been good so that makes up for it. Cheers :wave

Its compulsory here to wear cycle helmets aswell. LOL@slots in the door, all things that are too large to go through the 'slots in the door' are carded and the customer has to go to the local Delivery Office to collect. Glad you are having a good week, so I am, I've got a week off :Very Happy

So am I to assume that the posties I saw were breaking the law? Seriously, we travelled around quite a bit throughout England and noticed heaps of bike posties without helmets, it didn't even look like they actually had a helmet with them!! Boy if I tried that here someone would complain and I'd be sacked, they are really strict on H & S here. Personally I think helmets are dangerous - my body needs to release heat through my head so when I'm really hot out there the bloody helmet makes it worse. Also I'm always getting the dang thing stuck in overhead branches and bushes and things.
Tell me about those neat little pram-like trolleys I've seen posties pushing around London, they look so cool :cool :cool

Hope you are enjoying your week :Very Happy

No, it's all the time you're riding the bike. In our office it's a disciplinary if they catch you not wearing one.
Except if it's on a walking bit.

I think that only applies to sikhs. All other religions have to wear the helmet.
Personally, I have a strong belief against having my head cracked open on the kerbstone after being knocked
over by some idiot driving and texting at the same time, so I'm in favour of them.
Just spilt stain-remover down my shirt. Now how do I get that out?

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Yeah but seriously, I saw posties riding without helmets in residential areas in full view of the public, so that tells me they are not worried about it so that makes me assume it's not as big an issue there as it is in NZ. It is a legal requirement for all cyclists, and if a postie was caught not wearing a helmet - instant dismissal. I want to work in the UK!!!!! I hate bloody helmets :chuckle

Get used to wearing a helmet then. It's for your own good. You could end up dead or worse.

Worse ?

Yeah, worse. You could be brain-damaged, Stuck in a wheelchair, drooling vacantly for the rest of your life.

I agree they do make your head sweat on hot sunny days but they're worth it for the protection they provide. And look on the bright side, if you do move here, you wont have as many hot sunny days to suffer as in NZ.

It's better to wear it a thousand times and never need it, than to need it once and not be wearing it.

There are arguments for and against cycle helments

1) My bike only has one gear so I can't get over 10mph, why wear a helmet?
2) My bike also has no brakes so a helmet is better than nothing.

And you think I'm joking :)
