I read it all the way through, I think the 7 year sentence was about right, considering the Degloving injury which is quite horrifc suffered by these two girls along with the pshycological scarring they will bear for the rest of their lives, also the death of a young girl means a family was deprived of a Daughter.

Sad all round, every one loses in this case, however it must be pointed out he has finished his duty and was in all probability going home, he wasn't delivering at the time of the accident, still it could easily have been and that would have brought another charge of failing to secure mail, possibly illegal unauthorised and unisured use of a private vehicle for Royal Mail work.

it was August 2001 so well before SDD and he probably got someone else to do his 2nd delivery or they took turns to do a group of them.

I have been told by posties that they used to get out around 7 at our place and on a bad day have 2 bags and finish the 1st delivery at 9.am

Quite true, I would be finished the first delivery by 8.30, nip in McDs for a burger and coffee get back to the DO take another 40 minute or so break, sort for a bit, take out the second delivery consisting of 1st class and due 2nd class only and be home before 11 - course we did that 6 days a week not 5 but Saturday we only took due mail and no second delivery and I used to be home before 9.30. Used to leave the DO about 6.30/6.45.

We also used to be paid overtime then and we would sometimes have our 42 hours in by say 10 on Friday so the rest of Friday was at time and a half and Saturday was more plus we got a Saturday attendance allowance.

Compared to now - life was a doddle and fun.

Main question now being since the immediate departure of Ninian Wilson from Royal Mail who if anyone will respond in full to our National Health, Safety & Environment Officer's original letter? Any guesses!

Maybe the CWU should send the same letter to adam :cfo and let us all hope it has the same effect and he leaves the buisness before he can reply to us all!.

My sentiments exactly, and there should be an immediate ban put in place throughout all Royal Mail Delivery Offices in employees going out on delivery whilst using private vehicles for delivery purposes.

1997 - Ben Turk postman - fatal RTA (killed)
2001 - Robert Sharp postman - fatal RTA (sentenced to 7 years imprisonment)
2006 - Darren Cooper postman - RTA (disabled for life)
2008 - Keith Gunn postman - fatal RTA (Carole Paulson)

All of the above postmen where using private vehicles whilst on delivery.

I could go further and post pictures of these accident and make these court report available for those to read, the accident in Scotland was a sobering read considering the consquences to these girls, I must admit when I was younger I did use cars, back then I didn't know any better and wasn't advised of the danger and consquences of using it, it was in part due to management pressures and Job and finish policy, I stopped 5 years ago once I realised what a mug I am making of myself and felt uneasy about using my car. no more ever again.
You can't get a more firmer advocate against using cars now than me, this accident report only affirmed it.

There is also the issue of theft from private vehicles as well - a wee snippet from 2006 Guardian article:

The Royal Mail insists the security of the mail is "paramount".

The Guardian has seen postmen from the huge Royal Mail sorting office in Whitechapel Road, east London, loading bags of mail into private cars. Other delivery workers were seen driving to the back of the sorting office and dumping extra pouches and letters on the seats of their cars because the boots were already full - a clear security risk and a breach of Royal Mail policy. One delivery worker travelled his rounds on a scooter with a bag stashed under his seat and a second strapped to his back - a sackable offence.

In Whitechapel, east London, managers have registered 20 private cars for use on delivery but have not filled out risk assessment forms to check whether car documents are in order and locks are functioning.

In Leytonstone, east London, 11 risk assessment forms have been processed for the 20 postmen who have declared the use of private cars on deliveries. But in Chingford (E4) and Manor Park (E12), documents show that none of the 44 private cars being used on deliveries have been inspected. This is despite the fact that E12 is considered a high-risk area for break-ins, with 36 thefts of mail from postal workers' cars in the last two years.

In all, the documents reveal that Royal Mail managers have conducted checks on just 27 of the 177 private cars being used to deliver mail in east London.

The problems are replicated across the country, with reports of break-ins in Newcastle, Swindon, Milton Keynes and Manchester. In Manchester, where there have been 12 thefts from cars on delivery in the Levenshulme district in the last two months, union officials say that thefts are considered an occupational hazard.

When mail is robbed from cars, who is responsible, the Postman is, he would lose his job for the sake of shaving a few hours off his day, however in the Postman 's defence the manager didn't (probably) checked his car, security and documentation etc as the Manager was probably happy to save a few hours dockets.

Who gives the training in the first place?. Are royalmail encourageing this or are they blind to the problem?. FOR IF THEY ARE WHY DO NOT THE UNION SEND A REMINDER TO ALL!.

What kind of union official would say something like that?

Getting wet in the rain is an occupational hazard but theft can be stopped by not giving the thieves the opportunity to do it.
