Ninian Wilson Royal Mail Letters Operations Director and Board Members responsible for Safety - Departure from Royal Mail:

Last Friday, 10 October, Ninian Wilson Royal Mail Letters Operations Director and Board Members responsible for Safety left Royal Mail with immediate effect for personal reasons.

CWU/HQ Health, Safety and Environment Department received a number of enquiries regarding the Royal Mail announcement which began filtering out on Friday morning with the Rumour Mill in full swing by lunchtime with unverified accounts and explanations of events circulating.

I spoke to Ninian Wilson following the announcement and subsequently spoke to Norman Smith the newly appointed Royal Mail Letters Safety Director and Mark Higson Royal Mail Letters Managing Director. Mark Higson will be covering the Operations Director post in the interim, pending the appointment of a replacement.

Firstly, I thanked Ninian Wilson for his efforts to initiate a programme of Safety improvements in Royal Mail Letters and his commitments to working jointly with the CWU and support for the involvement of CWU Safety Representatives as a vital component.

Secondly, I was assured by Ninian Wilson, Mark Higson and Norman Smith that the departure had nothing to do with Safety.

Managing Director Mark Higson stated that he wishes to reassure the CWU that his personal commitment to continuing the safety improvement programme at the same level and to improve Safety performance remains unchanged. He, along with Norman Smith Safety Director, remains committed to working with the CWU and building trust and productive working relationships aimed at continuous safety improvements. Mark Higson will additionally be present to open the second national RML joint Safety Event with CWU and Unite/CMA on Friday 17 October.

Norman Smith said that it is obvious that Ninian Wilson made a great contribution in working with the CWU towards a joint approach and RML will sustain this through continuing to work together.

Is this the same as "The chairman and board have complete faith in the manager" followed shortly after by "left by mutual consent" ?

How many posties have been sacked and had the statement "left for personal reasons" on their references?

I'm over the moon about this. My opinion of Ninian was subterreanean, to say the least. I regard him as a careerist empire-builder, whose motive was to make a name for himself and get a fancy house in the country, no matter the cost. As with anyone like this, it takes no more than 3 years to get found out and thrown out. He was a destructive influence on the Royal Mail and this is long overdue.
