Several Post Office savings accounts are run by Bank of Ireland, which is one of six banks to benefit from the Irish government's move earlier today.

Until last week, Post Office customers enjoyed the same protection as other British savers - they would get back the first £35,000 of their deposits if the bank went bust. At that time the limit under Ireland's deposit protection scheme was 20,000 euros (about £16,000). But Ireland then raised its maximum payout to 100,000 euros and then today made the guarantee unlimited. The change comes into effect immediately and will last for two years.

"I can confirm that all Post Office savings held with Bank of Ireland are covered by the Irish government's new arrangement announced this morning," said Hayley Fowell of the Post Office. "This covers our Instant Saver account, Growth Bonds, Five Year Saver and Cash Isa." The heavily advertised Instant Saver currently pays interest of 5.75 per cent.

Dan Loughrey, a spokesman for Bank of Ireland, said: "Post Office deposits are on the balance sheet of the governor and company of the Bank of Ireland and are therefore covered under this scheme." He said about 1.5m customers of Bank of Ireland who saved via the Post Office would benefit from the enhanced protection arrangements. Although all its British customers were currently Post Office customers, he added, the bank planned to offer an online savings account to British savers soon.

It is also understood that British savers at Anglo Irish Bank will also benefit from the unlimited guarantee. Anglo Irish offers two best-buy savings accounts, according to Michelle Slade of Moneyfacts, the data provider.

"Its Seven-Day Notice account issue 2 pays 6.55 per cent interest, while the Easy Access deposit issue 2 pays 6.4 per cent. These accounts, which have a maximum balance of £2m and are operated by phone and post, were already best buys, so I wouldn't be surprised if they saw an influx of customers."

Other options for customers who want 100 per cent protection for their savings include Northern Rock, which is currently owned by the British Government, and National Savings & Investments, another state body.

The Irish government said in a statement: "This very important initiative is designed to safeguard the Irish financial system and to remedy a serious disturbance in the economy caused by the recent turmoil in the international financial markets."

The only other institutions to offer a 100 per cent savings guarantee in the UK include the nationalised Northern Rock and National Savings & Investments. Bradford & Bingley savers - now with Abbey - will fall under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme which guarantees up to £35,000.

The Post Office is the safest place for your money because the queues are so long that the recession will be over by the time you get to the counter - that's what they said on Radio 4 today.

That's funny L L :chuckle

Anyway,moving on....
Adrian Coles, director general of the Building Societies Association (BSA), told me: "Before any British saver switches accounts because of the new guarantee, they should write to the Irish Embassy to seek answers to some questions.

"First, has the Irish government quanitified the potentially huge liabilities it is taking on by guaranteeing sterling deposits in Britain, where household cash savings amount to £ 1.1 trillion?

"Second, where will the Irish government obtain sufficient sterling to meet its liabilities if a bank fails? It can't print more notes or raise taxes in the UK - both are the prerogatives of the British Government.

"Savers should beware that, if they switch accounts to take up this guarantee, they are effectively betting on the Irish government's ability to buy sufficient sterling in the foreign exchange markets. It is not at all clear to me that they have quantified the potential risks they are taking on, here.''

Against all that, Mr Coles is plainly talking his own book. He makes no secret about his fears that the shamrock guarantee will "distort savings flows on the mainland'' - by which he means encourage British savers to leave building societies for apparently unlimited security elsewhere. Two more reasons not to worry are that the Irish government is deemed AAA - or very low risk - by credit rating agency Standard & Poor's and it is not as if the Post Office has any exposure to the mortgage market, let alone buy-to-let.

Even so, it's a funny old world when a foreign government should come to the rescue of an important element of British life which is under threat from our own Government. Post Office branch closures have blighted many villages, accelerating their decline into dormitory suburbs. Perhaps where The Daily Telegraph campaign to Save Our Post Offices could not keep some open, the Irish government will succeed.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

In our branch someone helped a customer the other day cos they had a mix up with their savings accounts. 26 mins wait on the customer helpline, just to get through!

Once again it shows the post office wrong foot themselves as they just haven't got the staff at the proccessing centres to deal with the sudden influx of applications.

It is pissing a lot of potential customers off and quite a few are telling us they are going to go elsewhere :wave as they think "If you can't get this right, it doesn't bode well for my money" etc etc.
If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.
