Brentwood DO - Illegal and Unsafe Use of Private Cars On De

Post by brothermagrew »

The subject of the use of Private vehicles on delivery I think should be covered in depth in the CWU's new media format CWU T.V.

The town centre accident happened "just before 2pm" by which time urban deliveries should have been completed, and a "high impact collision" suggests excessive speed - so is this another example of a postman being overworked ( not that I'm making excuses for what he did ) ?

If this driver had a RM van and driving on the same road at the same time would this tragic accident have been avoided ?

Cars on delivery should not be allowed but they do not turn into death machines once a pouch is loaded into the boot . . maybe it could have been avoided if he was dropped off at his delivery point . Maybe if he was not in the vehicle then the car in traffic behind him may have been responsible instead.

This is possibly driver error and this is the issue, not what vehicle was being used .

Are you suggesting that every Delivery Postie should have an RM Van?
I doubt it!

The fact is, that there are a lot of people using their own Cars, who should beon Bikes, or Foot. The more vehicles that are used, the greater the risk of an accident happening. Also, there are regular checks on RM vehicles. And there is documentary evidence of their Services. Neither of which happens with Private Vehicles.

Also, there are a lot of these Private Vehicles. Which don't have Business Insurance, so they aren't Insured whilst being used on Deliveries.

I chose my words carefully .... read post objectively it is not promoting use of private cars.

Standard practice for police to caution drivers he has yet to be prosecuted and no evidence of speeding or poor driving.
Poor bugger living with this for rest of his life , the situation should be treated on the basis of what we know .

An MOT is evidence of road worthiness and to get tax, insurance is required also , as a rule of thumb a tax disc is a good indicator of a vehicle roadworthiness. Not an absolute rule but a good indicator all the same.

"he has yet to be be prosecuted and no evidence of speeding or poor driving" - really ?
Why then was he arrested and "charged with careless driving" ?

End of article says suspicion, investigation continuing. Sarcasism is a precise tool, looks silly in the wrong hands.

It's not always the case that a person is asked or forced to use their car BUT you will find that certain duties are handed out to people who own a car and because the previous incumbent used his/her car they feel obliged to use theirs not least of all because the delivery frame has been set out specifically with car use in mind.

This will not be the end of the matter, tragic as it is, it will be repeated until people realize that using their own vehicle is NOT an option.

Look at the line in green. That's what I was referring to.

My point was simply, that there was no point in asking wether it would have made a difference if he had used an RM Van. Unless there was something wrong with his Jeep. And we have no way of knowing whether there was, or not. Until the investigation is completed. The fact is, that there are far more vehicles than neccessary being used on Deliveries. Despite a long running campaign against the use of Private Vehicles, by the CWU.

You're right about him having to live with what he's done, for the rest of his life. But what we need to do, is try to prevent anyone else ending up in the same situation. We need a good deterrant, to prevent more loss of life.

But what's much worse, that the Postie living with the fact that he has killed someone. Is what his victim's friends and family, will have to go through. Not just because of their loss. But also, by having to go through the whole thing again, when it goes to Court! :hmmmm

We had someone using his own car on a firms drive the other week, when I asked him what he was doing, he said "the guvnors asked me to use my car because we are a van short" when I told him that he was an idiot to be using his car, he said "I'm up on a RTU(stage 3) in a couple of weeks and the guvnor has said he will put a word in with the sector manager for me"

It may not be a case of someone being FORCED to use there car, but it comes close :cry
rockytony67 perhaps you should pass a copy of Dave Joyce's letter to Ninian Wilson to show him what the consequences are when using private cars on delivery.

If he's being Blackmailed, with the potential result of his RTU. It's unlikley to change his mind. :Sick

Possibly quite true Andy, but I in all honesty can't see any harm being done, and can't see any harm either for the unit safety rep if one is in situ to have a word with the DOM and show him or her the error of their ways.
