at this time it doesnt
phg's still have allocate using the RMGTT guns, print outs etc
all it really does is do away with the need for scanning the paper cards for drivers
we have 3 phgs but this is to low,we need at least 1 more

as ofr the union issue we actually have 2 union reps as we are 2 offices recently joined together
yet ive heard nothing from the union on the PDA's?

you will need to get then pouched at a po otherwise you are not keeping the SD in the SD stream
the SD's are not scanned at the PO now

To be honest we had a 45/ 60 minute train up on these things, & after using them for 2 weeks the training could have been given in 10 mins? They are easy to use & are miles better than paper & more professional?

this is it,some could pick it up in 10 minutes(or think they do)
but plenty will need to be guided through every stage, this is what the trainings for
obviously those already using RMGTT or the 'old' tracked guns already have an understanding

Those RMGTT - the training I got was - Accept Delivery - yes - yes - no - no - 0201 - Yes - buggered if I knew what it meant then, but I do now - I hope the PDA training is a bot more in-depth.

ive been led to believe the union has sent a letter to all reps giving the pda's the green light.

There are no in principle disagreements to the training of staff to use them but there is no TOR between CWU and RM so HQ's line is do not use them until there is

Letter to Branches

No. 704/08 Ref:540 Date: 15th September 2008

To: Branches with POSTAL Members

Dear Colleague

Postal Digital Assistants (PDAs)

Further to LTB 693/08, Branches will be aware that we have reached an impasse concerning the rollout/deployment of PDAs. However, at a meeting held with Royal Mail Management today it became apparent that the issues raised go much wider than purely this piece of equipment and do in fact embrace the deployment of all new technology.

We have not yet concluded “a generic framework to deal with the trialling and implementation of all new technology” as set out in the Pay and Modernisation agreement and the attached Joint Statement has been agreed to deal with that question.

While the terms set out in the Joint Statement are being actioned, Branches are asked to make our Reps and Members aware of this position and to take all steps possible to avoid any flashpoints with Management in respect of the use of PDAs. Further information will be issued in due course.

Please distribute this as quickly as possible using text messages/emails etc.

Any enquiries to Bob Gibson’s Office, quoting reference 540
Email address: hnutley@cwu.org

Yours sincerely

Bob Gibson
Assistant Secretary

PDA’s RATHBONE PLACE 15TH SEPTEMBER 2008

Royal Mail and CWU accept that there is a need to finalise the generic deployment framework referred to in section 2 (Delivering Change and Flexibility) in the Pay and Modernisation Agreement, in order to provide clarity. We have jointly committed to resolving this matter before the end of September 2008.

In the meantime we are both keen to avoid any flashpoints regarding the deployment of PDAs therefore CWU Branches should continue to cooperate with the rollout/deployment of the PDAs.

Further communication will be issued in due course.bogstandard

Pretty much everything has been covered here.

PDAs are simple to use, but the 45 min recommended training time is about right I`d say. After the Tracked Item farce last year, the more time we spend training people up the better.

A lot of the 6 hour training course was more about how to train posties, more than what we are actually supposed to teach.

My main concern though is how the PDA will cope with wet weather. We are told it can handle a bit of rain, but I`m sure there will be one or two ruined in torrential rain.

tbh getting a practical unit for walk posties is a tall order
for it to small enough but keeping its impact resistance, waterproofing and enough battery life is a hard task
are there any countries using pda's on foot deliveries?

been trained on them, it was ten mins! am on hol now, so will i remember it when i get back? nope!
thought that the union said that by the end of sept that they would have an agreed code of conduct for them [what happens when you drop them etc]
i was given one that management had drawn up to sign, not done so as i managed to escape in hol before they caught me to sign it
is it another case of us been left in limbo???

Until next year. They were trialling smaller PDAs for walking duties, Blackberries, but that`s been knocked on the head for now. Reason being they `weren`t fit for purpose`, or another reason, too many were being unlocked and sold down the pub.
