Royal Mail’s wholesale division is launching a new service that gives its customers a discounted price for direct mail campaigns that meet criteria designed to reduce their environmental impact.

To qualify for discounts of up to 0.7 pence per item on downstream access prices, businesses will have to meet a range of standards to reduce unnecessary direct mail production through improved use of data services, including suppression of addressees who do not wish to receive direct mail. The responsible sourcing of materials and action to encourage the recycling of the mail piece also form part of the scheme’s specification.

The new service is based on two levels of participation – entry level receives a price discount of 0.3 pence per item, while companies who meet the intermediate criteria receive an additional 0.4 pence per item reduction.

Royal Mail has also identified further criteria that it will consider implementing as a third phase, benefiting the most advanced direct mail users through further discounts. The full specification can be found on Royal Mail Wholesale’s website at royalmailwholesale.com

Royal Mail managing director Stephen Agar says: “The price discount will encourage our wholesale customers to make the necessary changes to reduce the environmental impact of their direct mail campaigns. This further demonstrates Royal Mail’s commitment to support the advertising industry in creating more sustainable direct mail and we believe that our initiative will dovetail with our customers’ wider social responsibility initiatives.”

Firstly, if Stephen Agar is a managing director then we're all in trouble. Why do people need to give themselves ever grander names? Anyway, DSA are business customers, and one assumes that DSA mail is using databases that are out of date etc. So if they buy RM databases etc. then they get a discount. I'm sure there's a financial advantage, as going green is only worthwhile if money can be saved or revenue generated somewhere. Cleaner mailing campaigns means less 'gone aways' etc. which should help reduce RM's costs of having this mail floating round the system.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Stephen Agar was the head of regulation, and then became the head of wholesale, which managed DSA. The wholesale department was setup by Adam Crozier in 2006. It looks like they are trying to encourage DSA customers to stay with RM and not go for E2E by offering price cuts called 'green.' Agar is no managing director, probably the press getting it wrong, calling any tom dick and harry opeations director.
