Council withdraws PO closure application

Cornwall County Council has been forced to withdraw its application for a judicial review of post office closures.

A statement from the council on Tuesday morning said that "despite Post Office Limited recognising errors on its part" and admitting that the population of Cornwall was incorrectly stated, Cornwall County Council’s legal advisors have said that there is no reasonable prospect that a legal challenge by way of Judicial Review would succeed.

Leaders from all political groups have now "reluctantly decided" to withdraw the application to the Administrative Court for a Judicial Review into the Post Office Limited’s consultation on Post Office closures.

Deputy Leader of the Council Adam Paynter said: "Councillors from all political parties and groups have explored every possible avenue but we have been forced to accept that to pursue a legal challenge against legal advice is not possible and could risk the council being ordered to pay significant legal costs.

"Successive Governments have failed rural communities. We may have lost this battle but we will now focus our efforts on getting ministers to come to the county to see how badly their policies have ignored the needs of Cornwall’s rural communities."
