Technically you're 'renting' the bike/ computer/ laptop for the amount of time you are paying for it. In that time, if anything goes wrong with your item then it's covered as it's not yours, by the scheme and will be repaired free of charge. Around 6 weeks, more or less before the last payment is made you recieve a letter from them saying that, on xx of September or whatever, a final payment (and this is in my case re: pc purchase) of £30 will be deducted from your wages. The item then becomes yours. Hey presto! You have a PC/ bike/ or whatever! You've maybe paid over the odds where pc's are concerned but how many doing this job has hundreds, maybe a thousand to spend in one lump sum on a brand new, up-to-date pc?pistol wrote:I don't understand...you never actually own the bike?? you pay for the privelege of riding it for 18 months...then give it back??? what's the point in that??

Cycle to Work?
I recently got offered a job as a postie and im pretty excited.
Im also currently looking to buy myself a good mountain bike for cross country riding... So i thought rather than just dive in and spend money, is there a scheme in place at Royal mail?,
if so would i qualify as soon as i commence employment, or would i have to wait a while?
I want a bike asap, so if I would have to wait for discount, i guess id just pay full price.
Anyone know about this scheme?

Yes there is a scheme and you should be able to get one straight away. Once you have got all the bumph when you start see your Manager or contact the pay people and they should be able to advise. I think we doe ours through Halfords so they may help as well.

Cycle to Work?
Thanks for the reply mate.
The only thing that bothers me is that Halfords dont often seem to stock the kind of bike i would be looking for. I want a pretty high end bike for my own personal leisure use. Ideally i would buy from elsewhere, but I guess it wont do me any harm to wait a month from now until im In the job, and start asking for as much info as possible then.

part of the deal is that supposedly you use the bike to and from work...however doubt anyone is likely to check on how you use it or insist that you cycle to workHedge wrote:Thanks for the reply mate.

when i got mine, if i remember rightly you could choose how much you want to spend, and the amount deducted from your salary reflected this.. i got a bike worth £450, and paid it off my wages for 18 months maybe about £6 per week or so....and then the last payment to clear the repayments was £27

Of all the decent bike retailers,RM has to pick Halfords, its a shame really because if they had chose somebody like Evans cycles you could have picked up a good quality bike at a reasonable price unlike Halfords.
