Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney has called on Royal Mail to explain why some households in Derry have not been receiving their post until after 5pm.
The Sinn Féin MLA claimed the delays may be caused by the Post Office’s decision to introduce a new computerised delivery system named ‘Pegasus.’

“Basically this system is supposed to work out how long it should take a postal worker to deliver theADVERTISEMENT mail to any given area, but the reality is that the times given for staff to carry out their work is simply not enough.

“The local staff who contacted me with their concerns have said that many of the deliveries are too big and they cannot finish them in their allotted time resulting in a disruption to normal services. The effects of this disruption have been brought to my attention during the past week by a number of constituents who have complained about getting their mail as late as 5pm in the evening,” he said.

Mr. McCartney said small businesses could be affected by the delays in receiving post. “It is totally unacceptable getting mail that late in the day . If the current situation is not resolved people right across the city waiting on important hospital appointments, passports and in particular small businesses who rely on the postal system will continue to be affected,” he explained.

A spokesperson for Royal Mail apologised to customers locally but added the delays had nothing to do with the new computerised system. "Royal Mail apologises to customers in the Londonderry city area who received their mail later than usual recently. This was due to higher than normal volumes of mail for delivery in the area,” the spokesperson said.
