A POSTMAN set to deal with his last letter has been allowed to carry on working after 50 years in the service.

John Davies was expected to retire on Saturday when he reached his 65th birthday.

But after telling bosses how much he loved his job at the delivery office in Cowbridge Road West, Cardiff, he was given a reprieve.

John, from Canton, said: “I even went up to the company chairman, Allan Leighton, and chief executive, Adam Crozier, at an awards lunch recently in London and told them how much I enjoyed working for the business and asked why should I go if I was fit and willing?”

John followed his father into the postal service in 1959, starting out as a telegram delivery boy.

He said: “I never looked back. I delivered in the Canton area most of my working life. I used to deliver lots of telegrams, mostly announcing births and people sending Christmas greetings to each other. Now I am behind the counter, but I still see familiar faces.”

Delivery office manager Steve Davies said John was a popular and “superb worker”.

We're having people forced to retire at 65, no matter how much they love their jobs and want to continue. Strangely, they're full time.
But well done that man, if he's fit and willing then why not carry on, after all it won't be long before the retirement age is increased.

I'm not to sure that I could even do this job whenever I'm 50 let alone 65 :sad: unless you're young and really fit (and I mean marathon fit) then you've no chance these days, I can't wait to be out of effing job :evil/mad
