Post workers protest at Labour conference

Around 600 postal workers and their supporters marched on Labour’s conference on Monday to demand that the government back off from its attack on a public postal service and those who work in it.

As the noisy and vibrant march swept up to the conference hall, a section of CWU union members burst into a song of “Are you Tories in disguise?” and this was enthusiastically taken up by large parts of the demonstration.

Workers demonstrated to defend pensions, stop mail centre closures and maintain the post office network. People were cheered that Allan Leighton, Royal Mail’s chair, is to leave next year.

Workers had come from all over Britain, from Edinburgh to Exeter, to be on the demo and there were 24 CWU banners there. A group of GMB union members from the Remploy factories also took part.

At the pre-march rally, Dave Ward, the CWU deputy general secretary (postal), told protesters, “Even the most loyal Labour supporter must realise 100 percent that the policies of New Labour have made the industry a disaster zone.”

The union is now considering its response to the government’s assaults, and it is committed to national strike ballot unless there is a transformation in policy.

The ballot needs to be turned into reality.

Winning Back Crewe and Nantwich

I've just received a photo of me at the CWU rally at Labour Party Conference. This is me with CWU General Secretary Billy Hayes.

I marched under the banner of the Crewe Branch with members from the Weston Road Sorting Office. It was a tremendous event and they made a heck of a lot of noise. I know from friends inside the conference hall that the rally was heard.

During the Conference I took the opportunity to voice my concerns and support for keeping Crewe Sorting Office open to Postal Services Minister Pat McFadden. I'm sure it didn't make a scrap of difference, but you've got to say your piece.

It was very disappointing to read in today's Chronicle that it seems Royal Mail has already decided to close Crewe. I fully support the CWU at Weston Road and we must continue the fight. I will be at the rally on 25 October to give my support.

You had me going for a minute there. The picture was so similar to the one you posted earlier, and the first line said: "I've just received a photo of me at the CWU rally at Labour Party Conference. This is me with CWU General Secretary Billy Hayes." I thought we were about to find out what you look like TBT.

Fine words indeed, but unless there is changes in the policy of those at the top of Labour whats the point of CWU members in crewe voting Labour, it simply means GB can carry on as PM and that would be disatorous!
