The quicker you go the more mistakes you are bound to make. And the management won't thank you when you have an accident / lose a special / get complaints ie. mis-delivering, cutting across a customers lawn etc and the list goes on. Ok you may be slow on a walk you are not used to but this is not your fault and you should claim OT or cut off, whichever suits you best.

I need some advice to do walks quicker?
When I was a reserve after I started I kept a notebook for all the duties I did and referred back to when I got that one again.kwf166 wrote:Hi Guys, I been a postman for nearly a year now, and as you can imagined, I am still new to the job, or should I say still learning, I am on a different walk every week, take me about 2 days to get used to frame and walk, but how do you do the walk quicker?
Yesterday, it was really heavy, loads of packets, I didn't get there till around 11am, got back to the office after 4pm, so that about 5 hours, should I have done that quicker or am i been too hard on myself, apparently the average walk suppose to take 3 and half hours? so my one took an extra 1 and half, this probably true as I notice the guys that been there for years seems to get back quickerapparently this frame for the walk, is a bit messed up, so I did it my way, but this seems to have made it longer, tomorrow, I have a plan, I just hope it work, but it all depends on how heavy it is.
Need your tips, how do you do the walks, that your not used to? or even your own walks?
PS! I should also add I am part time and don't start till 8am
I always asked and got 90% of the time training on any walk I had not done before and got the regular to do it. That way I knew or at least had a good idea the best way to bundle and walk it.
I also listed where I could use a ginnel or alleyway to get from one part to another.
Where the Bog was
Where the cafe was
Where I could pouch off.
Basically all the stuff that should be in the Walk Log (318) but isn't half the time. Also printing off maps from Google Maps, although frowned upon by some, can be a big help, especially if the map provided my RM is up to its usual standard )small and unreadable).

If you are on a different walk constantly and don't know the frame, road off, i.e. sort the mail into roads, I find that quicker on a frame I don't know as you arn't constantly looking for the different roads.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet

Just keep on walking down never ending streets

Very hard for newbes to argue the toss with DOM's BUT, if you dont assert yourself they will take the BIG P. If you dont want OT, CUT OFF you have the right to do so. I have done it and will continue to do it if need be. DONT USE YOUR OWN CAR.
Join CWU first thing in the morning. £6 a month (price of a decent four pack) is great insurance. They aint great (rep dependant) but still worth having as back up.
Don' be a mug and take heavy loads. You are responsible for YOUR H & S (IT's LAW) so as stated above think of the later years when your knees and back are shagged. Don't expect a THANK YOU from Royal Snail as you collect your mobilty allowance. They will just want shot of you when you are shagged out. After all, the profits are not for you but for Little and Large at the top!
As for working quicker, know your street numbers, leave the bike (LOCKED) and walk circular routes. On small circular routes leave packets bang and ring on the door and walk off (within sight). If it is still there when you return chuck a 739 inda door.
Wait at door for 30 seconds max, BANG AGAIN AND RING AGAIN and start writing 739. If they open it whilst writing you can always bin the 739
You will get fitter than a quick fit fitter and the aches will reduce
Say hello to people whlst moving.
Don't stop movin'
Can you feel the pavement
RM's got us going around, 'round, round
Don't stop movin'
Find your own way to it
Listen to the pavement
Taking you to places that you've never been before baby now
Here endeth the lesson and as Shakespeare once said, RM is a crock of shite and it stinketh

I would also advice you to keep applying for your own walk asap but it wouldn't be easy as there will be lot of competition for better walks. And remember all the very bad walks to avoid when applying.

To do the D2D's quicker you can do what I do, if they're under your fitting on a saturday take them home, sit down in front of the telly and prep them together and you only have to deliver one lot then rather than three. I'm sure this suggestion will make some people here shudder but I find that it helps me immensely and being on the same job I always sort them into the gaps after I've prepped on a monday morning and then keep a handful on the back of my bundle whilst delivering so I take the rest where I'm going.
As for the walks, well years ago I often went for a sunday afternoon drive to familiarise myself with the area but thats not the case anymore when you can open a browser and look it it from above thanks to Live Earth or Google Earth.
I hope this is a help.
Good luck!

They are to be preped into your frame 20% a day. Also they are classed (i belive) as live mail and you
dont want to be caught with any of that in your house do you!!!
So saturday night put your feet up and watch the x-factor or do something less boring instead,
Or put your D2Ds together and wait for the I.B. to knock on your door, and you wont need to
worry about saving time then..... once your sacked

The management in my office are quite happy for it to be done that way. The guy asked for advice on doing it quicker so I'm just trying to help as most of the advice in here seems to be bloody minded militant attitude rather than practical "how to do it quicker" help.
