sorry majeed but the managers are in a tight spot because they are the ones that cut jobs so that we are down to the bare minimum to do the job.
i know they were probably told to do so from above but if they all got together and said we can no longer manage at this level then things may be better.

k979aaa is spot on,once you turn up for work there not interested because as far as there concerned the walks covered.
i used to do a lot of overtime, because you could make time and it's was worth it,but not now,and also aside from the deal
that the union negotiated, there's a threshold and once you go beyond a set amount of hours your hourly rate actually drops!
for example,
on the 25/08/06 i did 55 hours and came out with 324.98 net....works out at 5.90/hour
this week did a flat 40 hours came out with 275.00 net....works out at 6.87/hour!
i don't knock anyone for doing the O.T. but thankfully i can make do,also when i first started i was like Majeed and liked
to 'help out' but you soon realise the managers reap what they sow!
As i reacall the worst part of the way forward agreement was any one on 30 hours actually had to work 10 hours on
normal pay before it was considered overtime!!

worked day off 6.3 hours
and lates sa

sa 6 hrs .rate was normal rate! 8.25
4 hours overtime payed at normal rate 8.25
8.3 hours payed at 9.45 first 10 hours.

cant understand how they got to any of it myself

even the higher rate is only time and a seventh...

who dreamt these figures up?
i wanna blame the union :shhhhh
Up until 40 hours you're paid the standard rate and this includes the SA you do (they take that first).

You'd be right to blame the union but it was meant to discourage people working OT and to encourage RM to fill all the hours needed with proper staff.

But most of all help yourself and don't give a fu*k about the management as they don't care about you only that the job get's done!.Question "majeed" are you part-time or not?.
If I had my way, I would have taken a full-time contract, but they only offered my part-time. I guess like everything in life, K979aaa, it all depends on your outlook on life, doesn't it? My aim in life is to please my Creator by serving his creation and treating them as well as I can and always trying to make things better, regardless of what I get out of it. I guess if you're a person who doesn't look at things like that, life might be pretty grim. Also, not all managers, posties and delivery offices are the same. Finally, everyone is accountable for their own intentions which they take with them to their graves.

Most new postworker's do not get a full time contract but the reason i asked has already been repiled too by "disgruntledpostie1" as your first 40 hour's are at standard rate the next 10 at £8.72 per hour and thier after i think it is £8.12!. hope this helps you!.

Undertime, actually, dears! Undertime is the word!

Post by majeed »

Well, actually you get paid less for doing more after the first ten hours - and this must be unique for any company in the world:

(a) The start rate for an new OPG is around £7.70
(b) The overtime rate for a new OPG (for the first ten hours of overtime) is about £9.70
(c) The overtime rate for a new OPG (for any hours after the first ten hours of overtime) is again, back to the OPG's basic rate

> The discrepancy between the two overtime rates is about 20%

So, you get paid 20% less for doing over ten hours of overtime, or to put it another way, for every 20 hours of overtime you do, after the first ten hours, you work one hour for free (taking the overtime adjustment rates into consideration), or to put it yet another way, the reduced overtime rate is actually "undertime", because you don't get paid the full overtime rate for it.

But I still love the job and the people who I work with, such as you, K979aaa, Image even though your handle, i.e. k979aaa, is a bit difficult to fathom (and consistently type, also)!

Chill, man! I'll give you a hug in a minute, if you don't stop moaning, you old git! :cuppa

Actually - that what happens: when a full-timer leaves, he's replaced by a part-timer who does the same duty - but FOR LESS HOURS!!!! - so I've been told!

Appreciation and practicalities

Post by majeed »

I suppose the main thing is, you have a job and people get their mail. If you don't want to be a postie, then you can look for another job. If you do want to be a postie, and you don't want to do the overtime, then you don't have to. It's up to the individual. The work still needs doing and people still need their mail, regardless of who appreciates it.

In any case, this is a useful and balanced debate that we are having, which is what I always attempt to do when making any comments on this RMC forum: I'm not really interested in my opinion and I like to encourage others to give their opinions - as many as possible - sometimes by cajoling, sometimes by playing, 'Devil's advocate', if I may use such a euphemism! :evil/mad

The comments have been great so far. Keep them coming.

Three questions

Good point, disgruntled - I considered that as one of the possibilities behind the drop in rates after ten hours but do you reckon that the Union's plan has worked, all these years later: from the impression I am getting from people such as K979aaa and others in this thread is that the plan has not worked.

The questions are threefold:

1. Why? and
2. Has the Union been aware of the failure of the policy all these years (and perhaps before implementation) and
3. What is being done about it?

:hmmmm
