Can someone please tell me exactly why we need PDA's?

Also if theyre carried by drivers only why is it that smaller items (the ones more at risk) are exempt from this type of tracking?

Mainly as a maerketing tool. A lot of couriers, although by no means all, allow you to track items on line, RM want to get some of this market.

Good question and one that would be addressed by a nationwide agreement.

We're always claiming we're better than the others but they already sort faster than we do and even as a minimum we should be matching that. PDAs shouldn't be an obstacle. Why cannot royalmail enter into the spirt of agreement without confrontation or is that the real aim of all of this CONFRONTATION FOR IT'S OWN SAKE!.

royal fail cannot do anything without confrontation this is a direct result of having inept managers inplace (from the bottom to the top)
You will never get straight answers for any query from 'managers' because they do not have the bottle to speak out for fear of loosing there position after all most would not and couldnot survive in the great outside world but cling onto royal fails ideals no mater what

Good points, but as long as you can demonstrate you took reasonable measures. It's surely no different to the ABC scanners. If a collections driver goes out and the scanner doesn't work he can't record what time he emptied the box. Surely one adopts whatever was agreed there.

I can see your point that management could claim one thing when in reality something else happened. I do feel for you and when I was in Ops I got frustrated at the lack of trust on all sides, which preciptated the need for all these regulations for anything from breathing to actually doing the job.

Just glad I'm not involved in any of that anymore.

with some ! exceptions - many would not get past chargehand/foreman or stupidvisor - RM has more than it's fair share of a***holes in blue - present company excepted - there's a lot of people that have managed - many ex NCO's from the services - and many wouldn't touch it with a six foot pole - especially with the Walmartization :lfo

Years ago everything was done by "the manual' - the PO manuals filled a bookcase - RM with :lfo & :cfo have actually gone backwards with the Walmart style regimentation - as for dinosaurs RM is catching up - pre 1986 - but at least it's a start

Dutch are light years ahead of us 'chum' and with the equipment we use that isn't exactly hard.

other "coincidences " include casualisation , part time staff , people tramping round the streets late in the afternoon , a weak union , much , much higher postage prices - also on delivery there's a lot of multiple occupancy addresses with communal letter boxes - the joined up thinking RM haven't grasped yet . :lfo :cfo
