Why are most post boxes circular when most letters are rectangular ?

Also, why do most post boxes have apertures that will only take C5 or DL-sized mail? Ever tried struggling with a missort pouch? When they say, "If you have any mail to return either use a post office or a post box", I don't think they ever take this into account... We complain about customers with gnat's harrises but we don't get it right ourselves, do we, really?

Most post boxes have small apertures because they were made many decades ago when most letters were about 6 inches by 4 and very thin.

It's true: how many of us have a post box down the road which has the initials, "VR" (or something even earlier) embossed on it? Is that the only thing about RM that has not changed since the Victorian days, I wonder...
