Royal Mail begin preperations for Christmas

Summer is hardly over but already Royal Mail are well underway in preparing to deliver eBay purchases in time for Christmas.

Royal Mail will step up operations for Christmas deploying the largest double-deck trailer fleet in the UK, hiring three extra trains per day, recruiting 17,000 casual staff and hiring 50 additional buildings. They will also be expanding delivery time slots in December.

In some areas from 17th December Royal Mail will introduce evening deliveries between 5.30 - 9.00pm. This will be expanded nationally on the 22nd and 23rd December and will include items they tried to deliver earlier in the day. Packets will be redelivered on Sunday 21st December as demand requires. For those buyers who still weren’t home to receive their purchases local sorting offices will work expanded hours to allow them to collect their parcels or signed for letters.

For eBay sellers this is great news, items posted right up to Saturday 20th December should be delivered in time for Christmas. Items posted later than this will need to be sent on a next day service such as ParcelForce or Special Delivery.

The last posting dates for Christmas 2008 are:
2nd class - 18th December
1st class - 20th December
Special Delivery - 23rd December
International Airmail starts from 5th December depending on destinatio

It will be parcel deliveries working late on voluntry overtime.

People on this board seem to be very cynical about help from the union, still, whenever you've been sold out so badly and so much then it's hard to be anything else

The Way Forward, Single Daily Delivery and Pay and Modernisation - it does appear now that the conclusion to National Agreements has a certain inevitable quality about it.

They'll probably use Casuals to do it, as it will be cheaper than paying overtime.

In my 15 years we've never had any extra help in delivery at Christmas - all extra staff go to mail centres thats why we always get a backlog, too many people processing it and not enough delivering it, I wonder when some manager we realise

RM management are so thick, but I suppose it makes it better for us in the long run

When they do know what they are doing then we're in real trouble

I realise that some posties are getting bl**dy good deals for xmas but this is the time we can hurt them back by working our hours. Let's take em to the cleaners over this. They knew when they introduced lapsing during the summer that most of us would look towards the money during xmas rather than repay them but xmas would be such a great time to say "Yes RM, you are right, we should be working our 40 hours" & then cut off. Lets see where RM goes with that. They couldnt get agency workers all over & we all know how poorly addressed mail can be. Lets give them winter staffing. 40 hours only PT & FT.
Lets make RM a better place for our future than for us now. Fight for a better environment!!!

No overtime for me. Starting on time, finishing on time. 8 hour days no more no less.
They have kicked the goodwill out of me good and proper.

I was chatting with my rep today and he had a good point. The current agreement is that we only do D2Ds for the 1st full week of December and none past that week. Now is there any coincidence that everyone apart from RM is not that bothered about us working on the 27th December. I just hope the CWU do not fall into the obvious trap of "we'll let you have 27 Dec off if you agree to deliver D2Ds up to and including the week of 15 Dec 08"
