To be honest if you don't know them do not try this, just apologise and explain that its been a busy day and you are trying your best. Also invite them to call the management at your DO, if they keep getting ear ache they may change things, though I doubt it.

I come up with all different responses to people saying "your late today" this week i used the following replies
"I never knew i had a appointment''
"stop living in the past''
""No i am early""
Delivering on a monday i would say
"Is it tuesday allready""

I just tell them royal mail want me to deliver from 10:30 till 14:00,instead of 7:00 till 11:00.
That tends to get them of my back.

When I get this (often) I always agree with them and say what a disgrace it is getting your mail at this time, give them the DO phone number and always advise them to complain. Problem is most people think its our fault and want an argument with us. When I agree with them and recommend they complain they are usually gobsmacked.

yeah I just usually agree with them that it is late, but then blame Royal Mail for the time of 1st letter etc. Felt like saying to the lady. fancy a race then see who finishes quicker ?

I am very surprise that alot of customers are complaining about the lateness of their mail, the CWU went on strike for 8 days last year and we were trying to tell them what was happening to the postal service through the media. If we were to go on strirke again would we get their full support?

Depending on the person, and what type of day I have had, I may use any one of the above. If it's my walk, my standard reply is usually, "There is no set time for the mail to arrive, as long as it arrives within a twenty-four-hour period"; if I am doing someone else's walk on overtime, I have learnt to say simply, "I'm doing overtime", which (surprisingly) satisfies most people and quells any further enquiries. The initial enquiry comes as a result of the customer's perception, i.e. they are the only person on God's Earth to whom you deliver mail and you are their personal postman, whom they own. Why people seem to expect mail at the crack of dawn any more, is beyond me, especially since those types of deliveries were phased out years ago: this shows how much attention people really pay to their postal service and postmen.

Never mind being late, I've one old lady who gob-smacked me today.
"I didn't know you had started delivering on a Saturday"
Apart from the fact that she sees and speaks to me 5 Saturdays out of 6, oh well old age doesn't come itself.

You could have replied "No, it's Sunday today" - that would have put her straight !pinstripe wrote:Never mind being late, I've one old lady who gob-smacked me today.
