Anger as dumped mail trolley found

FEARS have again been raised about the safety of our mail after a postal trolley was found dumped on a Marton playing field.
The container was found abandoned, empty and presumed stolen, in a ditch on Lawsons Field by a member of the public.

Royal Mail deny any post went missing as a result of the loss but as these pictures show, the canvas box had been ripped open.

It was labelled Preston Old Road.

Stephen Foster, 39, from Marton, who found the trolley, said: "I was walking the dog on Lawsons Field when I saw the trolley in a little gully.

"I phoned Royal Mail who obviously didn't know anything about it and I assumed it must have been stolen.

"I expected Royal Mail to come and retrieve it, but I went back later and it was still there.

"It had been cut into and you could see that any mail that was in it was long gone.

"You'd think they would be a bit more careful because these trolleys certainly aren't secure."

Marton councillor, Jim Holdsworth, described the loss of the trolley as "a major concern".

A Royal Mail spokesman confirmed that an investigation was under way. He said: "We are investigating how this high-capacity trolley was stolen and later abandoned.

"We know that it did not contain any mail at the time it was stolen.

"We thank Mr Foster for notifying us that he had found the trolley."

It is the second time in a week Fylde coast residents have raised concerns that their post isn't safe.

Last week, The Gazette revealed one of the containers was being left tied to a lamp-post on a street in Poulton, storing letters until a postman picked them up to go on his rounds.

Residents and local councillors slammed the "unsafe," use of the containers and Wyre MP, Ben Wallace, labelled the practice "amateurish," promising to raise the issue with Royal Mail's chief executive.

Poulton grandma, Pauline Macken, who alerted The Gazette to the situation, said she feared the trolleys could contain vital bills, cheques and credit cards, which could all lead to identity theft if stolen.

And local councillor, Barry Birch, said the use of the trolley was "symptomatic of the disintegration of the postal service".

Royal Mail said they could not discuss the use of the trolleys for security reasons.
