4 Ten Hours Shifts..

We used to do 12.5 night shifts, seven on the trot every month, 12.5 hour Saturday and sunday day shifts, etc etc. Still do 13.5 hour Mondays (days into lates) every fortnight, plus a week of 10 hour nights every month. :whistle

You'll never understand if you don't have to carry 16kg around for 4 hours in all weathers, if you really want an idea of it then take a heavy bag and go for a walk (4.88mph) for 4 hours without stopping or taking a break and that'll give you some idea.

No thanks, you're welcome to that, but the thread was about 10 hour shifts, and my point was they're not uncommon in RM.
Don't really want to get into a "my job's harder than yours" debate.

4 Ten Hours Shifts..

How can someone compare a 10 hour shift fixing breakdowns with occasional heavy lifting with a walking postman carrying up to 8 bags of mail ranging in weight at the start of the bag from 16kg to 11kg in all weathers and conditions.

I am not saying your work is not hard but working with RAF Engineers in the past its hardly as punishing to the joints or as drawn out and long term as a posties. Before you jump in yes the bags do get lighter as you go on but you still have to carry 16kg at the start or you won't get done on time and I can't see management letting you cut off because your first bag was not full.

You started my job is harder than yours debate with the funny (?) comment of - "pansies" - did you not expect that to get any comment at all.

Your job may well be difficult and is most certainly a hard one, as not everyone can do it. Well a Posties job is just the same.

I didn't. It was about ten-hour shifts.

Ten hour shifts too long :left: ? Pansies............

OK it was a joke and I and a few others bit sorry. Perhaps it would have been better to post it

Ten hour shifts too long (Pansies :Very Happy ). (Emphasis has changed)

Sometimes its not what anyone says, but just they way they say it.

Funny concept, there. "You" earn the wages for "me"? In reality, without automation, we're both out of work.

Well lets not argue about what constitutes a hard shift.

The problem is not who does what but whether the agreements are worth the paper they're written on. National agreements are not being adhered to by the rank and file and therefore you can't blame RM for assuming that no one is bothered. I may well be critical of the union but you can't help those who won't help themselves. The agreements have been put in place to protect everyone and those who make individual agreements deserve whatever comes their way.

Saying mail volume's are down is only playing into royalmail's hand's to close mail center's and lose both operational job's and those who provide the support to them (romec)!. The postmen/women at the end of the chain know mail volume's are up year on year our back's and the meny more drop point's prove it!. All though social mail has reduced ie stamped and posted by the public, buisness (bulk) mail and packet's have increased dramatically over the last five year's!. POSTMEN/WOMEN NEED ENGINEER'S AND YOU NEED US AS MUCH AS WE NEED YOU!.

One issue is what happens to the quality of service when a postman becomes fatigued.
