Agree. Far more positive stuff on there than negative. Half the blokes in my DO can't even agree at the vending machine and I'd say the ratio of good to bad was no different to here. I still like it anyway. Still my first stop of the day and they saturate Google news so hard to miss them really. John Cawse writes some good stuff too and he's a postie. Good balance I'd say.

Of course the defence for a drop in standards of service will be explained away by the decline in stamped mail and a need to reduce costs and introduce more automation, but the biggest drop in standards has come about through cutting costs to bring Royal Mail in line with a cut-throat era of competition (which hasn't actually taken off as well as it might), not through falling mail volume which seems to hover around the 2.5%-3.0% level annually.

So according this article I am now handing around 5-6% less mail then I did 2 years ago? I don't think so! try an increase of 6%.

I read in the latest courier p7 "Fighting our corner" crap by John Duncan, there is a big drive to convince people that "mail is down" - after speaking to a manager and looking at the forecast figures for this summer compared to last summer mail has "INCREASED" and not all mail is being weighed at the mail centre plus you can't work out how many items of mail you've got through weighing, it is a nonsense.

Ladies and Gents don't believe the lies, mail is up and will continue to grow!

You could have knocked me down with a feather when I read that Mr. Duncan article. Been going for hundreds of years and the business brains in charge had no idea which costs were variable and which costs were fixed. They've JUST done a study of the pipeline and it's findings contradict what they previously believed , god help us ,these people get bonuses to.
Given these facts and since the auditors of their accounts sharply pointed out that the apportionment of costs within the business was arbitrary (not bound by rules, despotic ,random ), It really is anyones guess just how much we are truly subsidizing TNT :DHL et al

Couldn't agree more Belial. Chances are we won't really know till the independant report comes out next month but I don't think we'll be happy with the recommendations that are likely to come from that.

Well if the recommendations are based on RM's arbitrary cost apportionment and figures( Independent auditors, Ernst and Young - We CANNOT sign off these accounts as a true and accurate statement of the companies trading position) I don't think we'll be in a position to really know then. Seems accuracy with figures is not a company strongpoint.

Basically all figures that come from RM have to be taken with a pinch of salt. The company is creating so much confusion with agreements with the cwu that nothing is black and white anymore its all just shitty shades of grey - all deliberate of course.

That statement is more vague than what it purports to explain. Theres nothing vague about the agreement and nothing vague about closing mail centres either. If theres any vaguesness its the CWU's role in all of this.

Its all about managers being given the green light to do what they can get away with, for example, our manager is trying to say that the phase 3 agreement supersedes the SDD agreement when it doesn't, he's trying to implement a NO CUT OFF procedure by confusing and misinterpreting the agreement and trying to abuse the 30 min flexibility, for new starters this is very confusing and they are lucky that experienced staff and the union rep are standing in to stop this, some DO's won't be so lucky.

:Applause Exactly - you'll get that spivvy element :lfo , managerial redefinition - RM have always tried BS with new starters that they wouldn't dream doing with the old hands - a form of bullying

Also it puts the good reps holding the fort in a dangerous position - there's pressure from high and the inevitable "coincidences " for them . :cfo :hmmmm

knew this "crumbs from the table " would be a problem having had fragmentation in a ex nationalized industry .
