Exclusive: Massive public opposition to post office closures

An overwhelming 99 per cent of people oppose mass closures of post offices, a survey has revealed.

Of 145,480 people consulted, just 1,455 thought the Government's plan to axe more than 2,500 branches to save money was a good idea. The vast majority are bitterly against the plans, which opponents say will rip the heart out communities across Britain.

The figures, uncovered by the Lib Dems using a Freedom of Information request, cover consultations on nearly 1,500 post offices. In the face of campaigns, officials have saved 67. But the targets mean other branches nearby would close instead.

The LibDems' Sarah Teather said: "The Government has stopped listening. People want to know why they should bother responding to a consultation when the Government ignores the results."

The Royal Mail estimated only 7,500 of Britain's 14,000 sub-post offices are "needed".

A Post Office spokesman said: "We are implementing closures sensitively."
