Royal Mail cuts may end Saturday post

I can see the attraction for RM to cut saturday deliveries, at stroke you save 20,000 staff wages, heating, electricity costs and fuel, that must add up to a lot of £s, the Postal Act is ambigous, probably intentionally so, definition of a "working Day" is not clear, depend on whose job youbase it on, there employments that operate Saturdays and sundays, i.e.Emergency services, utility workers, amongst others.

While I would love to work Mon-fri and no Saturdays, I am also aware the biggest losers will be the float staff, especially in these times of economic uncertainity,if we carry on the way we are going, who knows how bad our financial situation will be, unless RM is proactive and try to find ways to source new revenue to pay for our outgoings particularly Pension which RM is guilty of all to fall into a ruinous state by taking a payment holiday and not acting sooner once it was apparent that the Pension scheme is having problems, this Ostrich sydrome had to stop, I do not imagine for one minute that RM will allow RM to go bust and close down, who can replace our network and knowledge, as a sole sharehholder the Govt have to bail us out, I can see difficult choices ahead.

other business opportunities needs to be explored and capitalised for our benefit after all we all want to stay in a job and have a life, Dole is no fun.

increasing the prices, or taking handouts from the Government aren't the only ways to pay for the USO. As I have pointed out before: We have a huge fleet of Lorries, and plenty of Buildings. So why can't we branch out, into general haulage?
Then there's new products. We have already seen the introduction of Broadband, Phone, etc.. What about other products?

All it needs, is some initiative!

But if they did cease Saturday collections, how would people be able to collect RMSD's, Recorded Deliveries, and
packets which were too big to go through the letterbox, when addressees weren't in?
Most people who are working are also unable to get to their DO Mon-Fri, and need to collect these items on a Saturday.

Managing the surplus framework aggrement would be used. The type of duty you hold is irrelevant!

I belive if changes do happen to saturdays it would only be to deliveries. DO's would run a skeleton crew to cover collections and callers office.

Well i said before these two :lfo & :cfo don't care one bit for service or the lack of it!. THEY :lfo & :cfo WANT TO DEGRADE THE SERVICE TO ALLOW THE COMPETITION TO OFFER A BETTER SERVICE AT A COST TO THE CUSTOMER (PROFIT FOR THE PRIVATE SECTOR T.N.T.& DHL & UK MAIL)!. We as public sector employee's cannot jump ship to these company's at will for we are barred from doing so!. But are :lfo & :cfo and what about their share option's and their zeal toward's the competition is NOW THE TIME TO ASK OF OUR GOVENMENT TO ASK THESE AND MENY MORE QUESTIONS OF OUR LEADERSHIP!.

There was a time when I truely believed that the Saturday delivery would go. However, having listened to many peoples points of view, and read various articles on the subject, now I'm not so sure. The unions for one would kick up a stink over job losses I'm sure. The other main concern would be how to handle the current volumes of mail, especially at this time of year, only on 5 days, instead of the present 6. I know most people would probably go for the 5 day route, but unless we lost a s**t load of traffic, ie say 30% then I cannot see it happening.
