POSTAL workers are on the verge of a walkout over conditions in the Cheltenham delivery office.

They claim packages and parcels are being left undelivered because there are not enough staff to cover normal rounds.

One postal worker, who did not want to be named, said shift changes were causing a backlog of post.

In an email to the Echo, he said: "This Saturday all delivery drivers have been told that they will not be doing their usual duty. Instead they are being made to deliver letters and such, just as a normal postie would.

"As for the packets and parcels that they would normally deliver, these are being intentionally left undelivered until the following day."

Union bosses are being inundated with calls and complaints and say the situation is reaching breaking point.

Paul Trehearne, branch secretary of the Communications Workers' Union in Gloucestershire, said people were losing patience with changes to working arrangements.

He said: "Over the last couple of months we have been getting very concerned over the attitude of management in Cheltenham.

"In the fallout after the dispute last year an agreement was reached but Royal Mail has ignored it.

"There have been savage cuts within the delivery office and postmen and women are reaching the end of their tether. Morale is at rock bottom.

"People are on the verge of walking out. Unfortunately the management in Cheltenham need action like that to realise the problem."

The office in Swindon Road deals with one third of Gloucestershire's post.

Mr Trehearne added: "It will come to a point where people won't take it any more. We are getting calls and complaints on a daily basis. They are from people who are dedicated employees in Cheltenham and they have had enough."

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said shifts had altered and staff were being given changing roles.

"Royal Mail agreed last autumn a wide-ranging deal with the CWU covering modern, flexible working arrangements – and the deal was subsequently endorsed in a national ballot," she said.

Reorganisation was part of the flexibility agreement and aimed to ensuring customers got a good service.

As i thought Royal Mail drivers are not normal unlike us walkers.
