Once esteemed Royal Mail now shows contempt for customers

SIR - Over the course of many years working in the centre of Winchester I often found myself making a last-minute dash to catch the post at around 7.10pm outside the (late lamented) GPO.

Half the time a friendly postie was ready and waiting in his or her van to take the letters directly from me.

A few weeks ago, with no warning, this all changed.




Now, even if I arrive by 7pm the post has gone. It would be the simplest thing in the world to change the collection times on the postbox, but apparently this is too much trouble for the Royal Mail.

The notion that it might actually matter when an item enters the postal system clearly no longer applies.

Admittedly, I could go into the W H Smith post office (TM) to ask, but the idea of queueing for an hour whilst contemplating the grotesque hypocrisy enshrined in the advertising campaign which talks of the People's Post Office (Copyright T Blair, Esq) only to be told by a cashier that they have no idea when the post goes, as it's nothing to do with them as Post Office Counters are an entity apart from the Royal Mail, just doesn't appeal.

It is desperately sad how a once-esteemed institution has squandered so much good will over the last few decades, and now displays open contempt for its customers.

A right Royal service? I don't think so.

Perhaps we should petition the Queen to remove her seal of approval.

Perhaps she should also ask where the post boxes for TNT Post, UK Mail, Business Post, DHL Post, and the recently granted licensee Scotpost are? What times they collect from the public, and what times they are open to take in public mail, and their prices... Remember dear the post is now liberated and you have a choice... Ooops Silly ME! you don't.
