POSTAL union leaders have called for the right to ballot for strike action over the proposed closure of Liverpool’s Copperas Hill sorting office.
They described the move as a “rearguard action” to fight any sudden decisions by Royal Mail bosses.
Earlier this month Royal Mail announced the outcome of a six-month review of its seven North West sorting centres.
They want to shut five, including Copperas Hill, and transfer work to other sites.
They propose to transfer Liverpool’s sorting duties to Warrington - a move which could cost 600 jobs.
Liverpool Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) leaders are working with Riverside Labour MP Louise Ellman, regeneration agency Liverpool Vision and Liverpool council services partner 20/20 to persuade Royal Mail to retain a sorting office in the city.
They have suggested three alternative sites to Copperas Hill which Royal Mail said is “not fit for purpose.”
Royal Mail territory director Steve Cameron met with Mrs Ellman and Vision chief executive Jim Gill on August 13 where he promised to consider any proposals.
But Liverpool CWU branch secretary Mark Walsh revealed staff at Copperas Hill, along with the four other threatened sites, have asked the union’s executive for the right to ballot for “action, up to and including strike action”.
He said: “It is just to make sure they (Royal Mail) carry on talking. We want to go to ballot straight away in case they make an executive decision and spring something on us.
“We spoke to headquarters early this week and we hope to get something back soon.”
He added: “It is a rearguard action for ourselves.”
And Mr Walsh claimed the unions have not had any contact with territory director Steve Cameron since his meeting with Mrs Ellman and Jim Gill more than two weeks ago.
But a Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “Our discussions with Liverpool Vision are continuing.
“However we have not received a further submission from the CWU and have written to them again this week to request they submit it urgently so it can be fully evaluated.”
