Watchdog rules out cut in post deliveries

Night Tonic wrote:It has nothing to do with Fluff (and apologies to Freeman) or right or wrong. Its just a fact that mail volume and revenue is down the world over. Period. Thats why even the States are retiring postal workers. Business is declining. What bit of that is hard to understand?

I have trouble with the bit where every day this summer lull period I have had to sort ,prep and deliver more items compared to every summer period since the introduction of SDD. Maybe it works like the inflation figures where everything you eat, use, pay for goes up-14%,16% 26% etc. but we get told the true figure is 4.1% ; so glad we got that 1.5% pay rise.

Ah yes, the old argument which never goes away.
"My bag's heavier, therefore those old mail volumes ain't dropping".
I don't know which is sadder, the continual reposting of the same tired riposte as a rebuttal, or the complete failure to grasp the illogicality of using that same line of reasoning as a rebuttal.
Nah, it's the second one....

Don't know about heavier ,it's the "three trays of letters,is less letters than two trays of letters" concept that I struggle with.

Ah well I would'nt dare to speak for others, just letting you know what my personal experience is, and true It could well be a statistically predictable anomaly, but I'm fairly confident that others will add to the sample size. Since I don't have the resources of a market research company , are we talking qual or quant findings cos for some purposes I think the MRS approves samples as low as 8-10.

Already exists, so far 11% think volume is down,88% think it is increasing;(sample size = 151)

To be fair ,this is obviously a self selecting survey( which, according to the rules of the MRS need not detract from the efficacy of the results) since people involved in delivery of mail are keenly aware of their daily burden and as such are best placed to respond. However it may prove enlightening if a poll concerning mail volume could be reserved exclusively for customers.

"Best placed to respond"? Hardly that, when opinions are based on "how many trays/bags I get now" vs "how many I used to get".
Being at the very end of a long chain doesn't (in itself) give a clear or meaningful insight into what's happening in other parts of that chain, especially when information given is so lightly dismissed as mere propaganda.

Well if you think a panel of bus drivers or trawlermen are more aware of daily mail traffic ,I bow to your superior insight

Why has this started up again. We in deliveries think Mail volumes are not down and others think they aren't never the twain will meet so instead of belittling the other sides opinion. Perhaps posters can voice their opinion without making snide remarks about others who hold a different opinion.

My personal opinion is that with the onset of DSA I don't believe that volume at my end of the pipe line is down, it may be in MCs, but what is definietly on a seemingly never ending downward spiral is revenue. With DSA we can be delivering the same volume of post as before yet the revenue will be markedly reduced.

Anyway back to the reason for my post stop the sly digs and respond with reasoned arguments please.

I was trying to work this out. I've heard so many different figures bandied about from 2.5% per year, 5 million items a year and even 5 million items per week(based on the usually incorrect figures produced by RM in WTL). Taking the most extreme figure of 5 million items per week and dividing it by the number of delivery posties (Say 100,000 to make it easier) means 50 items per week or 10 letters/packets a day.
When your delivery consists of between 1500 and 2000 items every day these 10 we have lost don't make a lot of difference to us on delivery, especially when we are delivering catalogues, magazines, Saga, eBay packets, Amazon, and not forgetting the never ending light bulbs. The constant 'savings' imposed on every office mean less staff doing near enough the same amount of work, so it's not surprising that we in the delivery offices don't readily believe that volumes are falling. Perhaps if TNT, DHL etc were to deliver their own DSA mail then we would, but that isn't going to happen. Unless it does we will never agree. :cuppa

I've said it before and i'll say it again.........
When a DSM stands in front of me and tells me the traffic figures of the day and it works out about 500 letters per frame and the frames we're having the conversation in front of (average 550 calls) are bulging with mail.....................
Then summin aint right!!! FFS!

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Although we have some slack days (as has always happened), we are generally very busy on the Bays. But we have a lot less people working in the Segs. As (as far as I'm aware) the official figures relate to the Mail we get paid for. It would explain the apparent discrepancies, between the figures, and what we are actually handling. :hmmmm

As for the problem with the Lightbulbs: RM should be bringing in extra Agency Staff, to help to deliver them. They simply aren't taking accout of the time it takes to knock on every door, to deliver them. That is causing a rediculous backlog, which lets the Customers down (reducing the chance of them sticking with us), and badly affects morale.

Perhaps you fail to see the bigger picture, it could be that in Barnstable;Halifax and High Wycombe only seven letters have been delivered since April maybe :nervous
