night shift's
with this site attracting a lot of new members, i'd just like to find out what has happend to the night shift's in your area?have they gone already?or if royal mail have there way all be gone by the end of july.i know there are a lot of senior men that work nights and if ive read right then there has to be at least a 33% change in all duties in the office to get a re-sign.means a lot of senior men could end up as reserves.

Our nights have already gone, due to exec action,we only had SA anyway.
SO...............we went on the vans and srewed the job up
But saying that, got to feel for the permanent night guys around, bearing in mind it now screws their working lives up

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Because we're running 2 sequencing machines we've still got a 7 man indoor night shift.
We do 23.30 - 7.30 although we're threatened with midnight,1am or 2am starts when they force through later starts for deliveries.
We were offered machine jobs or floating on earlies and we've all done around 20 years

Did away with them at SDD revision back in 2004. Very ineffecient duty structures though and only had 3 duties.
We had so many 6 day week duties going to 5 day week that had their longer day bulked out with more IPS and night was no longer really needed in our office.
PHG did PHG work from 3 am onwards and a duty went to the mail centre on a missort run between 3 and 5 duty 3 continued with IPS so with meal relief only 78 IPS hours out of the 120 duty hours were actually done each week.
It seems to me that most current night offices are proably the bigger ones.

Re: MDEC
I would'nt be sad to see that shift removed ( really family friendly ). Until they create a machine that reads 100% of mail there will always be a mdec nightshift somewhere.MDEC101 wrote:Plymouth MDEC Night Shift now down to about 85 people, people always leaving and not being replaced.
Our weekend shift Fri to Tue might be under threat from no sunday mailcentres working. They will never close HWDC though,

All our have gone now (i got a transfer to mc so i was lucky)
when the first lot of nights went the dom got the night staff in the office and said" as from next week all night duties bar 2 have gone"
The week knees on nights didn't even put up a fight in fact some seemed quite relieved to get off the night shift?

We lost the last of ours just recently, however on wednesdays, thursdays and fridays night the managers come round and ask if anyone will do it on overtime, you still have to do a delivery in morning, sometimes one or two of the hungry lads help out, but not always. same with the drivers, in order to get more packets done (packets fail on a daily basis) they moved their start times forward getting the footies to cover any early internal work ,then asked the drivers to come in early on overtime, because they were struggling early on.
