Union aims to recruit through TV

The Communication Workers Union is to become the first trade union to enter the television schedule this month with a programme aimed at younger workers.

The union, with 250,000 members in the Post Office, BT and the telecoms sector, is paying for a slot on the Information TV channel on the Sky Digital platform, taking it to nearly 9 million homes.

"We were driven by a desire to modernise the union's image and modernise our communications," said the CWU's head of communications, Kevin Slocombe. In particular it was targeting the union's 40,000 members under 30 and potential new recruits in areas such as call centres.

CWUTV will be a half-hour magazine programme hosted by former BBC presenter Emma Howard. Each monthly edition will be shown 15 times. The debut show, on Sunday, includes items on postal liberalisation, threats to pensions and the impact of the credit crunch on young workers. The show will cost £30,000 a month, less than the distribution cost of the union's magazine, and will be subsidised by union-approved advertising.

In five days' time on Aug 31st, CWU will be launching its own TV programme on Sky channel 167. CWU TV is a magazine-type programme created by the CWU for CWU members and produced by the union's broadcast partner, Flawless Media.

The first programme includes features on postal liberalisation, pensions in both Royal Mail and BT, and the work of the CWU Youth section. It also features news and views. The programme will be shown for the first time on Sunday Aug 31st at 6 pm and repeated on Tuesdays at 10.a.m and Thursdays at 4 p.m on Information TV, Sky channel 167, and simultaneously online at www.informationtv.com

CWU Head of communications Kevin Slocombe said: "This is an exciting addition to the union’s communications portfolio. Delivering the union’s messages to eight million front rooms sets the benchmark for trade union communications. We are really excited about CWU TV and hope union members will watch it and enjoy it.

"We are asking CWU members to contribute directly by having their say on the show.”

So not content with funding the labour party ,the CWU is now giving £30,000 a month to Rupert Murdoch and through him to his non Executive directors ,Leighton and Crozier. So my union subs are in part going into Croziers pocket! I need to think about this one

there's also the scare- mongering tactics with all the American style union busting that Sky have used to "persuade" staff against Union recognition in their call centres - DOH !
