Fight for the Borough CWU demo at Borough Post

As a further six Crown Offices in London face closure the CWU is holding a demo on Monday 12th May at Borough Post Office to protect the capital�s postal services.

Simon Hughes MP and Andy Furey, CWU National Official, will address the demonstration outside the Borough Post Office which will include local residents, pensioners, and representatives from the CWU and National Pensioners Convention.

When: 10am � 2pm Monday 12th May

Where: Borough Post Office, 239 Borough High Street, Southwark


Borough Post Office joins Maida Hill, East Acton, Tottenham, Ludgate Circus and Essex Road offices in facing closure with the loss of one hundred jobs. Each of the Crown offices will be closed and services franchised out to small retailers.

Andy Furey, National Official, said: �These closures come on top of the current Network Change programme and fundamentally undermine the provision of postal services in urban communities.

�Franchising is a real issue because we have seen retailers in other areas take on the Post Office franchise and then shut down leaving the community with no access to Post Office services at all. This has happened in W14 which is now the first post code in London without a Post Office. This is a warning sign to the Government and Post Office Ltd that they can�t continue to flippantly franchise off the network if they want postal services to have a future in this country.�
