I could go one better - Why not only deliver once a week, after all with the massive reduction in mail volumes it would be easy. One postie cover 6 walksBELIAL wrote:Why stop with Mon-Fri. ? Sure that might save 40,000 jobs but once youve set the precedent of changing the USO think how many more you could cut.
Why not deliver every other day? One postie covers two walks, no more next day delivery but I'm sure RM would offer the carrot of a token price reduction

If Royal Fail want to cut cost by moving to 5 days a week.
To save jobs
1. Find a way to do this work 5 days a week and get a week off every 5 weeks instead of 6 but that might be cut in pay. So that would be popular move I suspect.
2. Stop postperson doing two jobs ie driving duty after walks. To reduce job loss in numbers. So instead of 4 postmen doing 60 hours a week in can be 6 postmen doing 40 hours.
3. Ban overtime.
I would scrap Monday delivery for home instead of Saturday. But will business stand for it losing out monday delivery in firms.

We could save a few million by ditching the s*it :lfo & :cfo and a fair few more overpaid executive's!.linkinpark wrote:Now hang guys aint we all getting carried away? Five, Four, and even One day aweek deliveries with massive job losses? After all we have Dave and Billy at HQ looking after OUR interests and when you couple that with a working peoples goverment like Gordan Browns "New Labour" and the stand up CWU sponsored "New Labour" MPs looking after our interests what could go wrong?
Oops. Oh sh*t! Gulp! were in trouble.

Why not drop Saturdays?
Increase holidays, maintain the USO over five days, instead of looking to increase the workload why not decrease the workload and increase the D2D and keep the staff at its present level - well almost - we wouldn't need to cover for sickness and absence we would have the staff available.

" Universal service
The universal service means that anyone in the UK can post letters and parcels to any other part of the country at the same affordable rates. And it guarantees one delivery of mail for every UK household and business, each working day, and one collection of mail, six days a week.
So is saturday a working day? For everyone? Taken litterally this reads that mail must be delivered 5 days a week (as i assume that most mere mortals actually only work Mon - Fri) and collections undertaken 6 days a week. I know this is not a transcript of the Act of Parliament but surely if it is on the POSTCOMM websie it must bear some resemblance to the legislation. Moreover if Saturday is deemed a working day then why is it not worded as follows (or similar) ....And it guarantees one delivery of mail for every UK household and business, and one collection of mail, six days a week.
Indeed could this have originally been worded in this way to muddy the waters/leave it open to interpretation in case such a circumstance as we find in the current climate to allow POSTCOMM to allow USO to become profitable again but only delivering Mon - Fri.
Please if anyone can clarify the issue of working days V's six days a week (in this context that is) then it would serve to clear up this issue. Maybe POSTCOMM could be contacted to clarify this.
In fact I may contact the Daily Torygraph to see if they want to take it up seeing as POSTCOMM were quick to poo their story on Saturday.
