After several County Press readers got in touch about their problems with the postal service on the Isle of Wight, we decided to investigate by testing the postal service ourselves.

We sent 11 letters by first class posts to 11 different places to see how quickly they arrived.

County Press readers say hospital appointment letters and other important documents are arriving late.

One letter to the editor about the delays, sent first-class, took five days to reach our office.

So we sent some letters to different locations to see what happened.

Two letters were sent to East Cowes, with one each going to Cowes, Freshwater, Gunville, Ventnor, Sandown, Ryde, Nettlestone, Wroxall and Surrey.

All the letters went into the Victoria Grove letterbox in East Cowes on Sunday evening and were collected on Monday, October 5.

We were pleasantly surprised to record that nine of the letters arrived on Tuesday, October 6.

The Ventnor letter arrived on Wednesday, October 7, and the Sandown letter on Thursday, October 8.

Royal Mail's regulated target is for 90 per cent of letters to arrive the next day. Our result was roughly 81 per cent.

But all letters arrived within three working days, meeting Royal Mail's reliability backstop.
