I've been an idiot!!

Post by DGP1 »

Today the weather was fine, the sun was high in the sky and I had my sunglasses on but I didn't wear my hat so, my head is like a glowing lightbulb now, it's really sore (I'm sitting typing with an icepack on my head) plus I'm feeling slightly nauseous and tired

So let this be a lesson to everyone - cover up your head and neck (especially if you're bald :cool )

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Go to JJB Sport and pick up a cricket hat and it will give you plenty of protection in the sun. It is about a tenner. It is bigger and better than tiny hat from Royal Mail.

I don't think you were alone on this, I didn't have a hat, but I suppose I more hair, but you are right we should cover up, as you can get sun stroke and if you are feeling tired and sick, than you know you got it

Skin Cancer Warning to Outdoor Workers

Post by TrueBlueTerrier »

ASK AND YE SHALL RECEIVE - ITS OLD 2006 - BUT STILL VALID

No.470 /06
Ref E4
Date: 18 July 2006

To: All Branches

Dear Colleagues,
Skin Cancer Warning to Outdoor Workers

(CWU "Sun Smart & Skin Safe" campaign)

As Britain continues to get Barbecued In the sweltering heatwave with sizzling conditions expected to continue and temperatures soaring, the Union has launched a new "Sun Smart & Skin Safe" campaign and is issuing a warning about the risk of skin cancer and dehydration to outdoor workers.
New figures released by Cancer Research UK reveal that for the first time the number of men who have died from melanoma skin cancer in the UK has exceeded 1000, a 31% increase in the last decade. As a result the CWU has linked up with Cancer Research, the Health Education Authority, the NHS and HSE to launch a SunSmart & SkinSafe campaign focused on members working outdoors.

In view of the new and worrying statistics showing a considerable rise in the number of skin cancer cases we are backing the Cancer Research UK campaign but are running our own initiative aimed at our members who work outdoors, both Postal and Telecommunications workers in an effort to raise awareness of Skin Cancer, the importance of avoiding sunburn and the need to report skin changes to a doctor. The focus on outdoor workers is natural given their increased exposure to the Sun in comparison to those who work inside"

There are now over 70,000 new cases of skin cancer every year in the UK which has more than doubled since the 1980's. There are around 2000 skin cancer deaths every year, with the most serious type, malignant melanoma responsible for the majority of the fatal cases, around 1,700. Men are more likely to die from skin cancer than women, partly because they are less likely to take warning signs as seriously as women tend to do.

Cancer Research UK said it was intending to specifically target men and Sara Hiom Head of Health Information at Cancer Research UK has stated that People who work outside and whose faces, arms and legs are constantly exposed to the sun are more likely to be diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer. This is far more common and less dangerous than melanoma but it is important to have it treated as soon as possible.

The majority of skin cancer deaths can be prevented if the simple precautions set out in the SunSmart code are followed and with the support of Branches and Safety Representatives we want this campaign to raise awareness of the code.

Another important thing to be aware of whilst working in hot weather is the danger of dehydration, heat exhaustion and sun stroke. We all lose body water daily but even more so in hot weather through sweat and it is vitally important that this water is replaced by drinking plenty of water and eating foods that contain water. Dehydration is when the normal water content of the body is reduced. This can lead to a change in the vital balance of chemical substances in the body and cause fatigue, confusion, loss or consciousness and even death. Again the solution is simple - drink plenty of water throughout the day both before you go out, then regularly during the day. Water helps nearly every part of the human body function efficiently. Most people assume that their bodies will warn them before they become dehydrated, usually by triggering intense thirst, unfortunately, that signal can be masked and dehydration or heat exhaustion can set in with little or no warning. Common symptoms of heat exhaustion include fatigue, exhaustion, nausea, light-headedness and possible heat cramps. It can bring on diminished coordination, severe fatigue, and impairment of judgment.

Campaign Posters and leaflets are available and are being distributed by Cancer Research UK in partnership with the NHS and the Union is producing a new "CWU Sun Smart - Skin Safe Fact Card For Outdoor Workers" to be distributed to Branches.

The SunSmart campaign website offers practical information on the changes people need to look out for when checking their skin and can be accessed at www.cancerresearchuk.org.

The following free leaflets have been produced by Health & Safety Executive (HSE):

Keep your top on: Health risks from working in the sun [100kb] http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg147.pdf

Sun protection: advice for employers of outdoor workers [680kb] http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg337.pdf

Yours sincerely
