Second Halifax MP takes on 'Royal Mail shambles'

Both of Calder­dale’s MPs have now pledged to tackle the long waits res­id­ents are endur­ing to receive their post.

Josh Fenton-Glynn, MP for the Calder Val­ley, has joined Hal­i­fax MP Kate Dearden in prom­ising to find out why peopleare­see­ing­suchlong­de­liv­ery delays.

The Cour­ier repor­ted last month how Ms Dearden – whose recent min­is­terial appoint­ment includes a respons­ib­il­ity­for­postalser­vices– said­she“willnot­shy­away­from hold­ing Royal Mail to account for its fail­ures”.

Days–andsome­time­sweeks –oflate­posthas­been­lead­ingto missed hos­pital appoint­ments and the chance to appeal park­ing fines for some.

Ms Dearden said she has raised­the­is­sue­with­Roy­al­Mail and deman­ded action.

Mr Fenton-Glynn is also tack­ling the prob­lem, say­ing res­id­ents across his con­stitu­ency are exper­i­en­cing “unac­cept­able delays” in receiv­ing let­ters.

After mul­tiple attempts to raise this at a lower level, he has writ­ten to Royal Mail boss Alistair Cochrane.

“While occa­sional dis­rup­tions are under­stand­able, the volume and con­sist­ency of these reports sug­gests more ser­i­ous and ongo­ing issues and sys­tem­ic­fail­ings,”say­shis­let­ter.

“Royal Mail provides an essen­tial pub­lic ser­vice, and my con­stitu­ents have a right to expect that import­ant cor­res­pond­ence will be delivered promptly and reli­ably.

“At present, many do not have that con­fid­ence.

“Mycon­stitu­ent­sare­un­der­stand­ably frus­trated that these issue­shaveper­sisted­for­so­long, espe­cially where delayed deliv­er­ie­shave­had­real­con­sequences­for­theirhealth,fin­ances­and daily lives.

“I share their con­cerns and expect Royal Mail to treat this mat­ter with the ser­i­ous­ness it deserves.”
