In terms of fleet, the only way to make that work when yards are already overflowing with vans is to implement shift working. Simon Thomson was muttering about that in regards to vans being idle in the afternoon a couple of years back. Since then ours are sitting idle almost the entire AM because our times have shifted so far into the afternoon.
Exactly so because of network changes which Royal Mail deem to be both pivotal and necessary times are not going to go back. If anything in coming years they will go forward to accommodate retailers who can get more parcels into the network like how other couriers work.
This means shift work in terms of core delivery is a non starter.
Not only that but even if you could have shift work, recruitment would struggle even further if half the depot had to work late shifts. Plus the health and safety aspects of working in the dark etc. The special delivery's, box collections that are required earlier etc.
As for non-drivers. These vans aren't single-seaters, right? I would be over the moon if I were dropped off to do the heavy side on my own in peace while the driver handled oversized and the light side(s). That's midway between a pairing and a singleton - it eliminates the inefficiency of P&L by making the pod a little crewbus operation consisting of one driver and one walker.
This is absolutely non nonsensical and wreaks of trying to accommodate non drivers. People need to understand Royal Mail is a business that wants to make efficiency savings. That is what DM26 is all about as the above post points out. It is about reducing staff, not accommodating them.

There is not going to be a vehicle for every person. There is not going to be afternoon shifts on core delivery. There is not going to be mini crew bus operations for non drivers. Just absolute fantasy I'm afraid.

I'm well aware that every counterfactual I post on here is not reality nor liable to become reality precisely because I would be happy if it were and then I wouldn't even be on this forum.

Sometimes you just can't help fantasising. I'm not the only one - there were lots of alternatives being frantically proposed when the last Network Review was looming and yet it all went ahead as planned. About ten years ago the company indulged us in an ideas pitch, from which precisely zero non-facetious suggestions were implemented. It's plain as day what drives the decisions that have and will continue to alter delivery beyond recognition. I just wonder what will happen next April when DM26 fails to deliver (honk honk) the £300M savings.

Here's another idea for the reject pile: all the heavy walks out on the early shift and all the light on the backshift.
The machine stops.

We won't ever be making £300m as that would allow the CWU and OFCOM to start wanting concessions. Pleading poverty and diverting profits elsewhere suits their agenda :evil/mad :evil/mad

Where are all the spare staff going?
I’m not talking about offices that don’t have spare staff due to not being level before DM26 deployment - I’m taking about the ones who were level then went into 3 doing 4 duties etc. There is one near us that isn’t letting any go and are using them to mop up any excess work, but I’d argue that they aren’t really doing DM26 then, are they?

Initially 50/50 for obvious reasons until they add extra from the failing pods so they're all equally s**t which is what's supposed to happen.

Or if your manager can't or just can't be arsed to sort it out 50/50 will remain best.

Unless you worked in an office where nobody left, or the manager was allowed to replaced them once they left, then most offices were under staffed, I recall pre DM26 we were understaffed by something like 10 FT's but only 5 FT's understaffed for DM26, meaning we have now recruited 5 FT's to be fully staffed for DM26.

There were many offices level going into DM26. The fact they are being allowed to hold onto their spare staff to create an illusion that DM26 is working is the issue here. As I say, we have a neighbouring office that was fully staffed pre DM26 and are now holding onto them rather than putting them into the pool of local reserves. Then they are held up as a shining example.

Here the HCTs seem to be best off. Single drivers next then shared vans stitched up big time

The company is always threatening, or should I say the union is always saying the company is threatening, to bring back the ODM if we don't make DM26 work. As of this week we're apparently, six weeks late, fully staffed. I would not count on that remaining true. The horse is already dead but don't expect the floggings to ease up.

The present crisis originates from the moment RM were allowed to start chanting "we're a parcel company now". There is no model that can be put into practice that will function correctly until they are disabused of this incompatible notion. Ofcom can't keep sanding down the QoS targets.
The machine stops.

Anyone fancy quantifying what a model duty/pod would look like in terms of number of delivery points to allow it to be delivered ‘4 heavy, 4 light.’

We have pods created from 4 duties where the total count is over 3000 houses. Between 3 people now.
But it’s ok, some bags are heavy and some are light……

For anyone who says that 4 heavy and 4 light is just a figure of speech, why not then use 2 and 2 or 6 and 6 etc etc.
