Royal Mail buys Quadient's UK parcel lockers for €65M

What's the deal? Royal Mail owner International Distribution Services has agreed to buy Quadient's UK parcel locker network for €65 million (about £56 million). The deal covers roughly 3,000 lockers, which will fold into Royal Mail's out-of-home delivery network. It is expected to close before the end of Quadient's 2026 financial year.

Why now? The sale follows a strategic review by Quadient, which has decided to exit the global lockers business entirely. It has also launched a sale process for its remaining operations in Japan and North America, while keeping a smaller European private network within its mail business.

What's the endgame? Quadient wants to redirect spending toward its digital operations and cut about €120 million of planned capital expenditure over the next five years. For Royal Mail, the purchase adds scale, customers, and a pipeline of future locker sites as it expands beyond doorstep delivery.

By the numbers: The lockers unit has grown from around 2,000 lockers and €6 million in revenue in 2018 to 27,700 lockers worldwide by the end of January 2026. It generated €114 million in the 2025 financial year, up 22.4% year on year.

What did they say? Martin Seidenberg, chief executive officer of International Distribution Services, called the deal "an exciting step forward" for growing Royal Mail's out-of-home network. Quadient chief executive officer Geoffrey Godet said it would apply "the same disciplined, value-focused approach" to selling the rest of the business "while continuing to operate as usual and support our customers."

The signal: The deal underlines how national postal operators are betting on lockers to cut last-mile costs and meet demand for flexible collection, while software-focused firms like Quadient retreat to higher-margin digital services. Expect the remaining locker assets in Japan and North America to draw similar interest as consolidation continues; Quadient expects those sales within 12 months.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
