Tackling absence 'would save £1.45bn a year'

Addressing sickness absence rates in the worst performing industry sectors would save the economy £1.45bn a year, a report has estimated.

The study by the London School of Economics (LSE) assessed the effects of a £46m sickness absence management programme introduced by Royal Mail.

The company implemented a large scale health and wellbeing programme with screening, health promotion campaigns and, at larger sites, fitness centres and health clinics. It also recorded absence more effectively and trained managers to conduct one-to-one interviews on an employee's return to work to determine the causes of absence.

The measures enabled Royal Mail to cut absence rates from 7% to 5% between 2004 and 2007 - equivalent to an extra 3,600 full-time employees back in work. The LSE said it generated savings of £227m and improved productivity.

If it was applied to the 13 worst performing sectors of the economy, savings of £1.45bn a year could be made with an additional 21 million days worked, the report said.

"Following this blueprint will have significant benefits not only for individual organisations themselves," it added. "In the case of the UK's worst performing sectors, Royal Mail Group's example could provide a significant boost to the health of the UK economy."

One of my mates has just been sacked at stage three, trying telling him they were looking after his wellbeing.
Harrassing people at home with phone calls etc.
