I am near the end of my temp contact, what now?

Post by kwf166 »

I been at royal mail since feb 2008 and my contact was extended in march till May 27 2008, but since than it all gone quiet, one of the others who started the same time as me, has already ask the admin, and he told him, there are about 6 temps they wish to keep on, and has been sent to sheffield, I find this a bit weird, as I would of thought they would warn you in advance if they are keeping you or letting you go, I need to know one way or the other, so that I can plan ahead and perhaps look for another job  one of the guys are been helpful to me, has said I wouldn't worry too much, as they are short of staff at our office, and would be mad to let someone who been there for 3 months, especially when we are hiring agency staff all the time.

What should I do?

Dont quote me on this but this is what has happened in our office.
We've got a 'Royal Mail casual' in,so 1st off he works for Royal Mail has a proper pay number ect.
He was on a short term contract,10 weeks, but he has now gone over 3 months so apparently BY LAW they either had to get rid of him after 3 months or give him a full time contract.
So now he is on a full time 40hrs contract, the DOM who didn't want him as he is not really up to speed has had to keep him on.

It seems there is a new law about, but like i said don't quote me,but you may get lucky.
Anybody else know anything about this?

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Have you had any leave since you started, this is the trick they pull, they say you are on a 3 month contract and then make you take a week unpaid off at the end of the 3 months, if they need you they give you another 3 month contract, so you are back at the start again, and the cycle continues :cry

I'm in exactly the same position. 4 month contract expires at the end of the month. No news on whether or not I'm being kept on.

that is "interesting " but not untypical -seek professonial advice as RM seem to be banking on you not doing so , I could be wrong though
MURDERERS. Need to dispose of a body? Simply parcel it up and post it to yourself via DHL. You will never see it again.

Most people in our office just seem to have worked past their date with nothing being said? All seems a bit strange! Would like to have some kind of security with wife, 2 kids and a mortgage to think about.

I find it once you are in Royal Mail for at least 6 months, you should be ok as if you aren't any good by then Royal Mail will get rid of you. Royal Mail just like to keep people sweating to save few quids on pay but once you done 12 months it should be a pay rise and a permanent job.

Royal Mail will do anything to save a few quids.
