Could Selling Cannabis Save Royal Mail?

You wonder why no one has thought of this before. Why not combine the problem of diminishing post office business and the policy on cannabis use?

According to ABC News, Dr Alex Wodak, director of the alcohol and drug service at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney says cannabis should be taxed and sold legally through post offices around Australia.

Perhaps he has something here. The queues would keep everyone in business and might just save the day for the few post offices left in the UK too. Trouble is, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has just reclassed cannabis as class B - thereby dashing any hope of new outlets for much needed ingredients in hash browns.

Dr Wodak said: "What's so good about criminals and corrupt police that you'd want them to have a virtual monopoly of cannabis distribution? It would be taxed like alcohol and tobacco are taxed, you'd have producers who'd be licensed, and distributors would be licensed. I've recommended before that the best distribution system would be through Australia Post."

Now Wodak's high-sprited idea looks doomed to failure then. With mail theft already in the public eye, loss could be higher still with the chance of half a kilo of skunk in every other jiffy bag.

Nice idea though. If Labour had only advocated such a move prior to the local elections, things could have been oh so different for Mr Brown. They missed that one.
