Probe launched into voting card mystery - WARRINGTON

AN INVESTIGATION is under way after an unknown number of voting cards failed to be delivered in crucial wards before last Thursday's local and parish elections.

Last week the Warrington Guardian reported how hundreds of households in Penketh had not received them and neither had many in Culcheth.

The borough council was forced to hand-deliver leaflets advising people that they could still vote without their ballot papers, which contained details of nearest polling stations, and is now working with Royal Mail and the printing company to find out what caused the problem.

A spokesman for Royal Mail said there had been no delivery delays at its Warrington delivery office last week and all mail had been cleared.

A council spokesman confirmed an investigation had been launched between all three parties involved'.

On election night, Culcheth was taken comfortably by the Conservatives by 1008 votes and turnout was 34 per cent - more than the borough average of 31.

Penketh was closer with 186 votes seperating the Tories from Labour and turnout was 37 per cent.
