Can't we stop liberation and close Postcom and get strong again and invest heavily on technology to reduce sorting and balancing workload. But no that is about likely as Birmingham City winning Champions League in 2010.

If we were to pull out of the EU altogether then the Gov could in theroy close the market and reinstate the monopoly.

and that is the nub of the problem.

Government are more interested in savings/efficiency and looking good to business, Royal Mail are interested only in savings and cost cutting. No one is considering the social value and or service value and look where its got us. Some Know the cost of everything but the value of nothing.

There was a program on recently that showed an old guy who used to know everyone in the street he lived on for 70 years, he could name each and every one of them he said, and he had photos of each family and each house. Now, he does not know even his next door neighbour. When asked why he said "Well, it all started when they started closing the shops, library and post office along with the Pubs" asked what he meant he said "Well this is where the people met and organised things, it meant people knew if something was wrong and could come together to sort it out, the village had a community spirit and there was no trouble".

Nowadays there is a perception, whether true or not, that youths are running wild, young adults are binge drinking, no one takes responsibility for anything. Now this is a simplistic outlook but when there was a community feel about local areas, there was less trouble because everyone knew everyone and this had an effect on bad behaviour. The community spirit has disappeared at about the same pace that libraries, post offices and local amenities have closed. A connection, probably not but it has to have some effect.

exactly (and in spite of IWW's less than imaginative comment). Government and Postcomm will be left to 'face it out' like all failed policies.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

"large firms have benefited" from competitors cherry picking the lucrative business and offering slightly lower prices.
"homes and small firms had not gained" - and in fact they have suffered by postal prices for stamped mail increasing well above inflation.
Surely large firms benefiting at the expense of the general public is equivalent to eroding the universal obligation, and charging different rates depending on who sends the letter is as serious as charging different rates depending on whether it is going to a big city or a remote hamlet.

Heard it said before but now i wouldn't be surprised if they split delivery off and make it another company then all the competitors as well as RM can fight for the sorting and delivery to the DO then they all pay to maintain the USO
as it seems that DHL etc don't want to put in a national work force that will deliver to all UK addresses as why would they ? cause they have us to do that!

Surely this report is good news for any posties out there, and MacFan's comments indicates that if delivery was a separate company and other businesses used them then the USO is more likely to be protected?

Secondly, top50 companies account for 40% of volume so if zonal pricing did come in then they would have to pay extra just like those who only send one item.

The price of stamped 1st class & 2nd class mail has gone up but that was to reflect the real cost of these, whereas other product streams have come down in price.

Less and less mail is being sent in a time critical manner these days. People who complain about their mail not arriving on their mat at 7:30am in the morning usually when questioned cannot come up with examples when that mail was actually needed at that time.

The main issue is this emotional attachment to post offices and getting mail in the morning and having your milk delivered. However, the public including ourselves who rarely use these services now expect the infrastructure and service to be maintained, but who is going to pay for it? We all vote for political parties who offer lower taxes supposedly.

its no big secret that the eu (which has an unelected president) has become a tool for the the multinational companies. their goal is to end small businesses and any government control in the markets.
they conjure up hundreds all laws that only the big boys can afford to implement .

It's nothing to do with voting for political parties who supposedly offer lower taxes, the problem is political parties whose priorities, whether they include them in their election manifestos or not, include illegal and unwinnable wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, bailing out Northern Rock and replacing Trident.

I think you'll find our"elected" leaders spend a lot of time and money promoting this defeatist attitude
