A SURVEY has revealed nearly nine out of ten Southend and Leigh residents report their postal service has not improved or has even worsened.
The survey, launched by Southend West and Leigh MP David Burton-Sampson, found persistent dissatisfaction with Royal Mail services in the area, despite repeated assurances from the company and a public meeting earlier this year.
Royal Mail said it took residents' concerns seriously and defended its record, saying 93 per cent of letters are currently delivered on time in Southend.
Mr Burton-Sampson said: "The most common delays reported in my survey of residents’ views on their service from Royal Mail are about second-class post.
"NHS letters come next and then first-class mail.
"In broad terms, 88 per cent of people who responded have reported either a continued poor service or, unbelievably, a service that has worsened since April.
"Only 10 per cent mention that they have seen a noticeable improvement."
Residents shared concerns about delayed mail from essential agencies such as the Department of Work and Pensions, as well as missing birthday and greetings cards.
Mr Burton-Sampson said: "Residents have reported having to go to the sorting office to pick up big bundles of post for themselves.
"The vast majority of people told us that they use the post service regularly and register either their total dissatisfaction or strong dissatisfaction with the service.
"Not one respondent reported an acceptable standard on their post."
He said the results paint a "depressing picture" of Royal Mail’s performance.
Mr Burton-Sampson said: "It is unfortunate that despite repeated assurances and brief periods of improvement, the levels of service remain poor.
"This is completely unacceptable. It is vital that we have a reliable postal service.
"My survey is a damning indictment of the service we are receiving and, be in no doubt, I will take this further and continue campaigning until we get the postal service we deserve."
A report will now be prepared and sent to the minister ahead of a follow-up meeting.
A Royal Mail spokesperson said: "We take concerns about delayed mail very seriously and know how important it is that customers receive their post on time.
"Our posties are out delivering every day in Southend.
"A times, short-term local issues can affect individual routes and, where this happens, any mail not delivered that day is prioritised for the next working day.
"More than 93% of all letters are currently delivered on time and over 99% within a week."
