How long future walks.

In the long run I can see people struggling with anything over, say 4 and a half hour walks. Even if the bag drops are good, it's a long slog every day, and non of us are getting any younger. I'm sure that many of you feel the strain some days, and what about loo breaks? The weather is another issue, the hot days are coming fast, and this can only add to the fatigue factor, not to mention sunburn, heatstroke and dehydration. Extreme cold, could also be a problem for some. It wouldn't be so bad if we didn't spend that long in the office, so we are a bit fresher when we leave the office, but, unless RM can chop about 2 hours off your indoor work to get us out earlier, then I fear it will be impossible for some.
I have no problems with change, as long as it's to benefit EVERYONE, not just RM. However, peoples health and safety, and general well being WILL, I feel, be compromised for further financial gain.

The gent that is doing the pegleg rehash said that the walk time they are aiming at is 03.05 with 25 minutes for loo stops and bag pick ups most the walks in the office are over.

My office is trying to introduce 4hr walks but Health and safety recommend 3.5 hrs walks. Clearly RM regard H and S, not. Also trying to introduce 10/12 hour shifts but they can't force anyone to do more under the new working time regulations.

I am presently studying payroll in my course, so this was very interesting reading. Wonder if RM are rushing to tell people this information.

I was out for 3 1/2 hours today light day used my car which saves1/2 hour.Pegasus says mine is 3.20.3 10 sounds like fun

"Employees are entitled to 11 hours rest a day" This is the rule. I've got the Working time directives as i'm studying payroll."

that is the same as our office ... even our manager admits our deliveries are longer than 4 hours

Are you sure you have got this right mate?My office has been working 10 hour days for almost 2 years and under the pay and mod agreement innovitative duty structures(4 day week,9 day fortnights)would all mean working more then 8 hour days.I think its the Maxium your allowed to work mate.You must have a 11 hour break in any 24 hour period.
From the way Forward agreement

6.2 Daily Rest
From week commencing 2nd October 2000, the minimum daily uninterrupted break from work will be nine hours in any 24 hour period.

From week commencing 1st October 2001, the minimum daily break will be 10 hours.

From week commencing 6th October 2003, the minimum daily break will be 11 hours.

Don't know, but thats what we were told recently, so will just have to wait and see for now.

Watch out they will be 3hr10min walks so long as you keep a pace of 5 mph up knowing RM.

How is it we are all making it easy for RM and will readily accept a 4hr delivery?
I remember when I started well over 20 years+ ago that having to walk 1&half hours for a 1st delivery and 45mins to 1 hour in the 2nd was too much for some.
You are making a valid point about the weather;age and comfort breaks. How many times have you went out at the start of your walk and the weather has been heavy rain,then sunshine etc What effect is that having on our health? I have also watched quite a few of our young 'whizz kids' posties at our office flying round 3&half hour walks who have had serious falls and injuried themselves [1 was almost sacked because he done his knee in!], what would 4 & 4.5 hour walks do to them? Also, what happens when they get older will they/us all cope with these walks when we are forced to work until 65?
I am like you I have no problem with changes and working to my time.But where is it all leading to -Long term? Posties forced to retire early through ill health,someone having a serious accident because they were running round their delivery,what would the deliveries be like at Xmas 10-15 bags as norm?

It all makes me wonder if RM dangles enough carrots [cash] in front of us what we will accept as THE NORM?????
